Oh well this is all starting to sound way over my head here its still a nice gift i cant complain, but i think ill stick to consoles lol. But i bet this thing can do emulation of ps2 gamecube, wii, and dreamcast pretty well thats all i care about

Don't get too freaked out by it. Most games will run without tweaking, and it's not as hard as it sounds at first. There are lot of great reasons to play FPS on PC if that's your jam, especially since the mouse is a superior pointing device over the analogue stick.

Just start with a free FPS and see if your machine can run it smoothly.

Lol i already use a mouse on the ps3 for call of duty works great ill work on it tommorow took some pics of the graphics card in my pc if that help i can post it tommorow if you like im just a bit overwhelmed with this and need some sleep

3. Install/update drivers

4. Install Steam

5. Play cheap indie games until you can upgrade your hardware

Use your current desktop as a bulky HTPC or secondary PC for school, work, etc., and start a pocket-rocket budget build from the ground up. If your avatar is any representation of your spending habits, it shouldn't take terribly long to scrounge up $600 or so.

That's ok. The Windows 7 driver should work just fine. I have an older Windows 7 PC that has a graphics card driver for Vista.

There was a suggestion to put WIndows 7 on it. I would hold off and wait a week or two until you've had a chance to work with 8. Yes, the metro interface is different but you can easily get into desktop mode with pressing the Win button or install Start8. Windows 8 is supposed to be much faster at many operations, etc.

The majority of blogs I've read has people preferring Win8 after spending time to get used to the interface.

Aside from fighting the shitty 'start menu' for touch tablets, you'd better just hold off on buying a video card until you see what driver updates come out and whether Nvidia or ATI/AMD make any drivers are worth a damn for a while and then start considering your options. Windows 8 was just released last week and drivers for everything might suck for a while.

Windows 8 shouldn't be a problem for gaming. It tends to be in the same ballpark, and performs better more often than not - some game comparisons here. Plenty of reasons to not be gung-ho about 8, but performance is not one of them.

His main problem is that his video card is the lowest of the low end. It's not even a card that AMD offers at retail, which is probably why the general Catalyst driver package doesn't support it. HP has the driver for download here.
