New computer now what? help!

thanks noise, just got home from work stopped off at best buy to use up a $70 gift card my dad gave me and i picked up battlefield 3 and dishonored cant wait to play both these. I also bought this last week for the xbox 360 but it doesnt work as well as the ps3 version but luckily it works on pc. http://www.splitfish.com/index.php/en/p ... -shark-360 i love using a mouse but im not a fan of using a keyboard so i love this thing

ughhh wtf i installed dishonored and its on normal graphics settings and once i get into the game its at like 1FPS, i dont get it i must have more than enough power to run it. i guess i forgot why i got out of the pc scene in the first place at least when you buy a game for console you know its gonna work when you get home. anyone have any clue what im missing? i tried updating my graphics card driver but there seems to be no amd radeon hd 7450 driver for windows 8

No amount of processor cores or ram will make your graphics card run that game. You have an extremely low end graphics card.

Your G3D Mark is about 379... by comparison, my lower High End 7950 scores 4,452.

So that said, you invested money into the wrong areas of your machine. Almost all modern PCs will have the CPU and RAM required for gaming. It's the GPU that makes the difference.

I take it you bought your machine pre-built. Do you have a link to said machine? If so, we can help you budget out a decent graphics card. I even have a 6850 I'd be willing to sell that will handle modern games on medium settings, and in 1080p, just fine.

so what card do you reccomend i get? this is the exact computer they got me, i wasnt there when they picked it out im sure they just told the guy a computer for gaming. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+ENVY+D ... ifications, i had forgotten what a pain in the ass computer gaming can be sometimes its nice to know with a console that you can go out and buy a game and bring it home and know it works.

I personally would go with a crosshair ATI HD 7970 setup.. Obviously that will run you around the price of a basic desktop but you probably won't have to worry about upgrading for several years.. And I personally would purchase a video card on Newegg.com.. You get the best value there buying computer products independently..

The problem is we have no idea how good his PSU is. I would recommend he just buy my 6850 for real low cheap, but, I don't even know if his PSU has an extra PCI power plug. If it doesn't that basically eliminates a lot of good options.

PSUs aren't too expensive and tbh if he was serious about getting the cards I suggested, money wouldn't be an object at that point.. But if it is, then go ahead and get the 6850.. The point is does he want a setup he won't have to worry about in 2 years that can run absolute max settings now? Hell the card on my laptop is only marginally better than his current, but it can run most of the available games on medium settings, which is fine since I don't think people buy laptops to see games in max resolution anyways, they just want them to run at a decent FPS..

Personally though if I were to buy a desktop that was prebuilt.. I probably would fish on newegg at one of those ibuypower, or cyberpower PCs which are basically prebuilt and charge extra based on labor, but basically are configured to where you can upgrade them fairly easily in the future.. So say you want a crosshair setup or whatnot, you probably have the prebuilt hardware that allows it..

Aside from fighting the shitty 'start menu' for touch tablets, you'd better just hold off on buying a video card until you see what driver updates come out and whether Nvidia or ATI/AMD make any drivers are worth a damn for a while and then start considering your options. Windows 8 was just released last week and drivers for everything might suck for a while.

Yeah honestly I would get a PC with windows 7 on it.. Not the best idea to get a PC with a fresh operating system in its infancy.. Ubuntu is probably even a better choice if you can find one..
