White PC-engine by itself (without leads) is only worth like $30 US. Don't support gougers.Curlypaul wrote:The converters seem to go for around £70 here, which is pretty expensive, but a PC-engine is going to cost me around double that. I know they are quite cheap in the US, but not here.BurningDoom wrote:Those converters are more expensive than the system. You'd be better off just buying a PC-Engine if playing PC-Engine games is your goal. Of course there's that whole power-plug problem in Europe, isn't there? I don't know if there's a work around on that or not since I don't have that issue in the U.S.Curlypaul wrote:Well I've learnt something, I always assumed that the TG was the 8bit predecessor to the 16. So if I get one of these the US games will work with it and if I can find a Hu card convertor I can play the PC engine games on it. Thats def worth a purchase I reckon.
The power issue adds to the cost a bit, but not much. I can get a step down converter for about £10.
I'm quite happy with the US library tbh, there are some great looking games missing but there are still a load that I'm interesting in playing and can't play on anything else so I'm still pleased with the purchase.

I know where PC-Engines come from yes, and I've seen lots of posts from people in the US saying that its cheaper to buy a PC-engine than it is a TG and an adapter card thingie. That is not true here, the cheapest PC-engine I could find was ~£150 including shipping. I bet you could buy one in the US cheaper than that?Breetai wrote: You do realize that PC Engines are from Japan, right? They aren't "quite cheap" in the US compared to anywhere else.
It's cheaper to buy a PC Engine and get it region modded, to be honest.

Whilst I certainly back up your claim that PC Engine stuff is more costly here than in the US, you can definitely find a PC Engine for cheaper than that. The average selling price on eBay seems to be about £50 plus postage - and not all of them have crazy postage either.Curlypaul wrote:I know where PC-Engines come from yes, and I've seen lots of posts from people in the US saying that its cheaper to buy a PC-engine than it is a TG and an adapter card thingie. Maybe you were looking at PC Engine Duos?
Re: New PAL Turbografx consoles
No, it was the def just the basic square PC-engine. At the time I was looking there were only one or two being actually sold from within the UK and they were BIN for a ridiculous price. There were others from other countries that were willing to post here, but obviously the postage pushed that beyond a sensible price as well.
Maybe if had more patience I could have found one for less.

Re: New PAL Turbografx consoles
That's just unreasonable. I can't approve of sellers ripping off UK customers who don't realize the difference between $30USD and £50.

It happens, take a look at the price of Colecovision games on ebay.co.uk. There seem to be some reasonable items on there atm, but most of the sellers want £20+ for Donkey Kong or Carnival. In this case it is far cheaper for me to buy them from the US and pay the postage.
Anything that wasn't made by Sega or Nintendo, expect to pay over the odds in the UK

True, every place has stuff like that. I don't want to think how long building a ZX Spectrum collection through buying from NTSC countries might take.

In the UK it's dead easy though. even if you can't find an original, making a reproduction copy is dead easy.theclaw wrote:True, every place has stuff like that. I don't want to think how long building a ZX Spectrum collection through buying from NTSC countries might take.

I think that is what he's getting at. The machines and the games are cheap as chips here, but hard to find and expensive in the US.
Re: New PAL Turbografx consoles
That's BS if they are £150 shipped. Just buy one from a seller in Japan. You are definitely looking in the wrong places.Curlypaul wrote:I know where PC-Engines come from yes, and I've seen lots of posts from people in the US saying that its cheaper to buy a PC-engine than it is a TG and an adapter card thingie. There are three "basic square PC Engines." The "basic" one is the white one, which is the one we assume you are talking about because it's the only one with the name "PC Engine." The other units are the Core Grafx and Core Grafx II, and they are quite a bit more expensive than the white PC Engine is. Having it include hook-ups or not will also affect the price. No, it was the def just the basic square PC-engine.
