While I can't say I've compared them, Tim Willis did claim that the BFG edition retools the slow, plodding pace of the game a little, along with other changes. If what he's saying is accurate, then the new version may be a bit closer to what Doom originated as.MrPopo wrote: Those are all well and good, but the problem is that it isn't Doom. Doom and Doom 2 had you running around blasting the minions of hell at high speed. Doom 3 is a completely different feel, even with the same basic premise of "we accidentally opened a portal to hell". So while it can be a good suspense-FPS it's a bad Doom game.
Doom HD Re-release

Re: Doom HD Re-release
Kotaku just ran a piece that compiles a bunch of old reviews of Doom from when it was first released. It's kind of funny now to read the review from the guy that thinks the game would be improved if he could talk to the monsters. haha.

Re: Doom HD Re-release
It's funny how back then people could review a game many months after it was released. Doom was released in December of 1993 and some of those reviews are from April/June of 1994. Nowadays there are reviews in youtube within 24 to 48 hours of the release of a game. Unless it's excellent, within 3 to 4 weeks of its release, all the buzz has died and no one talks about it anymore. It might be even on sale in stores by then.J T wrote:Kotaku just ran a piece that compiles a bunch of old reviews of Doom from when it was first released. Nobody seems to like this BFG release, it's apparently just a cash-in. id are no longer cutting-edge; except for the 3D headset they plan to launch soon it's their legacy that keeps them afloat.

are you planning to make a dedicated thread about the shit-storm?Pulsar_t wrote:Nobody seems to like this BFG release, it's apparently just a cash-in. id are no longer cutting-edge; except for the 3D headset they plan to launch soon it's their legacy that keeps them afloat.

There's no shitstorm here, at least you get what you pay for.
I would love a revised edition of Rage with an actual game inside, that would be nice.
And contrary to popular sentiment here, I don't want another Doom. Leave the series to retire in peace.

I don't disagree with you entirely, but I equate it to this. The Dawn of the Dead remake did the inverse, with making fast running zombies and frantic action and pace. Both movies are excellent. The technology was more advanced, so when Doom 3 was developed, you were able to delve into that narrative that the first games didn't include until the conclusion of each Episode. You're not wondering the origins of the Hell Barons or Cyberdemons, you're running and gunning. I understand the game play isn't the same, but I appreciated the suspense and backstory that the earlier games didn't provide. There were plenty of moments where I felt it was faithful and you had to run from things, but not all out like the earlier games were. It was neat to have that perspective finally.MrPopo wrote:Those are all well and good, but the problem is that it isn't Doom. My dad and I played co-op via Xbox Live, and having been the flashlight holder for a lot of it, I thought it was a neat gameplay mechanic. I know I might be in the minority for it, but the storytelling of Doom 3 has been influential in the Dead Space series, and probably a few others.

This. A new school Doom wouldn't work. What they need to do is make a new Quake game that will crush all the boring, slow paced and "realistic" modern war shooters. We need a frantic, fast paced deathmatch FPS with wild, imaginative level design that's out of this world that becomes as popular as an eSport as Starcraft 2.Pulsar_t wrote: And contrary to popular sentiment here, I don't want another Doom. Re: Doom HD Re-release
I'm still trying to search around how the older games(Doom1 and Doom 2) look.. For all I know it could be using Doom 3 engine.. Still intrigued by getting the old WAD versions of the games on ps3 finally though..
