Doom HD Re-release
Re: Doom HD Re-release
My only interest in the Doom 3 BFG edition is its compatibility with the Occulus Rift VR goggles. I'd like to get a pair of those and I would get Doom 3 BFG just for that.

I for one actually enjoyed Doom 3. There was always a looming feeling of despair and suspense. My dad and I played co-op via Xbox Live, and having been the flashlight holder for a lot of it, I thought it was a neat gameplay mechanic. I know I might be in the minority for it, but the storytelling of Doom 3 has been influential in the Dead Space series, and probably a few others.

I'm one of those weird people who plays Doom through the Chocolate Doom source-port because I don't really like the enhancements in graphics and what-not people have made over the years. So an HD release isn't of any interest to me.
The Doom 3 BFG edition is interesting because I didn't really give Doom 3 a fair shake the first time around so I'll probably pick it up once it's cheap.

I never really thought about it but I think you're right, Dead Space does seem to draw from D3. Whether you like Doom 3 or not, it was an important game and it looked absolutely incredible back when it first came out. It's worth giving at least one playthrough.Blu wrote:I for one actually enjoyed Doom 3. There was always a looming feeling of despair and suspense. Dead Space is one series that actually made me hesitate to turn that next corner or go into that dark room - haven't felt that way in a while!

YEAH DUDE! I'm really pretty stoked for Occulus Rift and I hope to God that it catches on. They had a top notch Kickstarter run, so I'm hoping it lights fire once more games get developed for it:aaron wrote:wait, what? that sounds awesome. I also wanted to add, I think I'm one of the only people in the world that actually liked the flashlight controls in Doom 3. It forced you to be vulnerable. You can't have guns when using the light, you can't have light when using the guns. It did irritate me at first because it is an admittedly clunky juggling act you have to do, but I eventually got used to the juggle and ultimately I found it added tension to the game, so I appreciated the gameplay element. I think the tension of a lights-on/off gameplay mechanic was later better implemented in Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which suggests that this kind of gameplay device can actually be used in a way that doesn't completely frustrate the hell out of the player.

I use Doomsday, but I similarly turn off pretty much all the graphical enhancements. The only ones I use are the particle effects on the projectiles/explosions and the general fact that the levels are actually 3D, instead of 2D with vanishing points.Gunstar Green wrote:I'm one of those weird people who plays Doom through the Chocolate Doom source-port because I don't really like the enhancements in graphics and what-not people have made over the years. Those are all well and good, but the problem is that it isn't Doom. Doom and Doom 2 had you running around blasting the minions of hell at high speed. Doom 3 is a completely different feel, even with the same basic premise of "we accidentally opened a portal to hell". So while it can be a good suspense-FPS it's a bad Doom game.I for one actually enjoyed Doom 3. There was always a looming feeling of despair and suspense. The premise isn't bad, it's the execution that's lousy. Far too many times I'd switch back to my gun and be completely unable to hit my target because it was an Imp or something else that moved around a lot. Having a narrow flashlight in darkness while being able to use your weapon still gives tension because of your restricted viewpoint; you aren't sure if you're being flanked. It's the having to choose between being able to see anything at all and being able to shoot that sucks.I also wanted to add, I think I'm one of the only people in the world that actually liked the flashlight controls in Doom 3.
