I would have to say Final Fantasy X. It really suprised me by managing to avoid a lot of the classic rpg storyline pitfalls. I think the whole idea about Sin, and all the religious undertones were very well done, and were handled in much better way than rpgs that tried this before it, namely xenogears.

And on the subject of the intrusive random battle encounters, my favourite rpg where you can pretty much avoid this the entire game is FF8.

Learning that the main character was already dead was a nice plot twist. Too bad they had to fuck up its ending with the abomination that was X-2. I would have preferred a nice vague ending that's open to interpretation.

I also appreciated FFVII's ending - before the onslaught of FFVII fanboy heroin we have today.

I remember being fairly taken with the Vandal Hearts story. Shining Force 3 has a complex story, but I'm entirely sure it's neccesarily that good. In all honestly I'm of the belief that very few if any video games have stories that are on par with novels. I prefer to stick to a good book when I need a story and play games wherein a good story is just an added bonus that I don't require to enjoy it.

I always enjoyed the Final Fantasy 6 storyline. A somewhat cliched "Save the world" intro (but what RPG isn't that?), but the big twist happens midway through.

The protagonists fail.

The world gets pretty messed up by Kefka, and the party is scattered to the four corners of the world. So they slowly gather together again and defeat Kefka in order to have a future for the world.

I always thought KOTOR 1 had a good story and plot-twist, despite the fact the KOTOR 2 was a slight disappointment...

Slight.... ehhh the ending was crap to me.

Anyways the best storyline rpgs to me involve you not being a spikey haired feminine guy with a love triangle and a plot hat involves you to save the world.

That being said eliminate every final fantasy (they are good games but yeah same story basically) But final fantasy X was the best one :D

But yeah I think KOTOR has the best story with good twists.

And even though its cheezy Pokemon was good too.

I finished Skies of Arcadia a couple weeks ago and loved it, although I don't play that many RPGs.

I have to say Final Fantasy IV. Another that should be added is SMT: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2.

Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and Grandia 2 had me the most enthralled. I'd say Grandia 2 caught my interest storywise because of my own views on the universe etc.

Western RPGs get a bum rap on this forum.
