I'm gonna have to go with Final Fantasy VI. Sure, it's an old favorite, but I enjoyed the diverse cast, and while you could say that Terra is the main character, it doesn't quite sit right to call her that. It's more about the group. The individuals that make up the team, not just one person. That's something I hated in the later Final Fantasies, that it became about individual members, and the others would get shunted around as side characters.

Suikoden II, for me, by far had the best story. It had some great twists, which I love, as well as one of the greatest villains ever seen in an RPG. And the one part where it absolutely succeeded where I find most RPGs fail, it was filled with emotion.

Another great story I thought, though I think im in a minority here, is The Legend of Dragoon for PSX.

Unfortunatly i have never been able to play suikoden II, i own all the suikodens aside from that one :(

I actually beat legend of dragoon twice. it has been a long time though so i don't recall all the details of the story. i remember really enjoying it when i did play it, and i found another copy at a pawn shop a few weeks back, so i will play it again at some point, but i have a pretty big back catalog right now.

The Baldur's Gate series, no question in my mind at ALL.

Also Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask the Betrayer gets an honorable mention.

Gotta go with Final Fantasy VII. Its just layered and oozing with story, sub-story, side-story...irrelevant stories. Very few of which are tedious and irritating to watch/read. Everything is paced smoothly and allows enough time to let things expand and unfold. Really it just makes you wanna keep playing, cause you feel bad if (the) meteor comes in and lays waste to everyone.

I give a nod to FFVI as well. SMT series always have some weird stories that is so intriguing to me, the apocalypse thing, light versus dark, good versus evil, God versus the Devil, is never overplayed for me. An often forgotten game, though an SRPG like FFT, is Tactics Ogre. That has so many political intrigues that you wouldn't believe.

terranigma or super mario rpg. terranigma had a great story, soundtrack, and looked great on the snes. super mario rpg really threw a new perspective into mario games, and had a wicked easy and fun battle system.

My recent farorite is Tales of the Abyss for ps2. A little "emo" in places but overall is was good there was alot of humor and backstory.

My favorite old school RPG story is Lufia. It's got a classic story based around a invented mythology. And in the Second game you get to play as the mythological characters. I just got wrapped up in the story even though there were pages of text.

It's kind of ironic that I find RPGs to be a horrible medium for story-telling, compelled to other more action-oriented game genres. I mean how can you tell a story when you have to pause it 10,000 fucking times for a random battle? The answer is, you can't.
