What rpg has the best story?
RPG
It has to be Final Fantasy IV for me with Dragon Quest VIII being a close second. The first time I popped it into SNES back in 91, I knew I would be playing video games the rest of my life. I still look for a RPG that made me feel that way. There was something about the story that just sucked me in and wouldn't let go until I found out what happened. Playing the remake on my DS is a dream come true.
Very true. I agree that action games get to the story much quicker, but usually they aren't quite as complex as true rpg's. I'd say point and clic's like Snatcher or The Neverhood have some of the most interesting stories.Mozgus wrote:It's kind of ironic that I find RPGs to be a horrible medium for story-telling, compelled to other more action-oriented game genres. I mean how can you tell a story when you have to pause it 10,000 fucking times for a random battle? The answer is, you can't.
Thats why i like game where you can see the enemies like Abyss and Chrono Cross. You could simply avoid the enemies to further the story and level up when you felt like it. I hate random battles for the most part but some games are just too good not to play so I'll deal.
Agreed on both points. I'm not even a big fan of point and click but that is definitely the genre designed to tell a story, however it does have a similar flaw in how you constantly get stumped on the often completely unorthodox puzzles.ott0bot wrote:Very true. Some of my favorite jRPGs have been games like the Chrono duo, and Grandia 2, because they let you manage the battle frequency. I'll even accept games like PDSaga and Skies of Arcadia where they let you do away with random battles via an item or upgrade.
Very true about getting stumped on puzzles....especailly the Neverhood. I have entire pieces of paper covered with ideas on how to solve some of them. ha!Mozgus wrote:Agreed on both points. You can actually do away with random battles on FF III (and i think IX) with an item as well....but you don't get it until later in the game. Moogle charm i think.
Also i like your new avatar man....another one of your designs?

Other than some slow load times...it's really great. Tons of worthwhile sidequests, really funny dialoge, good story, great environments, good wepons system, great 3d beat 'em up style battle system where you can even have a friend control a character, and mostly it's fun. You can see the enemies and avoid them if you want....sometimes its a bit tricky though! I sunk nearly 90 hours into it the first time through and ther are several things you can only do the second time. Great game, dynamic and fun.disorderlyvision wrote:tales of the abyss seems to get quite a bit of praise. i own it but havent had a chance to play it. i might have to move it up on my list of games to play.
I've never really played that many RPGs to be honest but I did just finish Panzer Dragoon Saga earlier this Summer and it was pretty good. But of the RPGs I've played, I'd have to say that Parasite Eve had the most compelling story for me.
However, that said, I think I was much more driven by the storylines in Ico and Shadow of the Colossus and many other actions games than I was with any RPG. Flashback, Out of This World and Heart of the Alien all have storylines as compelling or more compelling than any RPG I have played.
I'm also somewhat of a Tomb Raider fanboy, I wonder what a Tomb Raider based RPG would be like?
