I know, we all have our preferences; I love Saturn and DC, but there are very few titles I genuinely enjoy on Genesis.

A few are: The Punisher, Cyborg Justice, Beyond Oasis, Ghouls N' Ghosts, Comix Zone, Splatterhouse 2&3, and a few others.

Thinking about it more, I think it's just the controller.

I really don't like the Dreamcast controller at all.

I like it for certain uses; mostly ones that don't require the crappy-ass d-pad.

That's why when I saw the Ascii FT pad, I had to get it for fighters.

Anyway, Harper, if you haven't you really should try out Gunstar Heroes, Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania: Bloodlines and, yes, Rocket Knight Adventures. If nothing else, to at least appreciate that "hey, these are very well done." For any RPG fan, it'd be crazy to miss out on Shining Force II and Phantasy Star IV. Those games absolutely rival FFIV, VI and Chrono Trigger.

Although I had the Genesis before the SNES (of course, it came out first) and I played a lot of fun Gen games (lotsa rentals) I still was partial to Nintendo games. When Gunstar Heroes game out, it was exactly what was missing... Treasure. :D I still think Contra 3 and Super Castlevania 4 are better (also not so insanely difficult either) than the Genesis ones. RKA is good stuff for sure.

Shining Force II and Phantasy Star IV are definitely fun but they aren't even in the same league as FFIV, VI, and CT. Fun for sure, but she might not satisfied with them after the SNES run of RPGs (if she's into them).
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

Fun factor is definitely in the same league. Depth-wise, the SNES ones are larger; more "epic". I guess it's all how you define "same league." For me, I prefer playing Shining Force II to any of the SNES RPGs. It's just more fun for me. Both SForceII and PSIV are extremely well designed and do pretty much everything right. I figure that puts them in the same league; length be damned.

I know I may not be one to listen to when it comes to RPGs but:

I think if any game can be considered in the same league as the SNES RPGs it would be Shining Force II. I know some people split hairs about it being a tactical RPG but seriously, anyone who loves SNES RPGs really needs to give that game a chance. It doesn't deserve to be considered a second class citizen next to the Square games.

Phantasy Star IV also comes damn close.

Beyond Oasis/Story of Thor shouldn't be missed by A Link to the Past fans either. I'm not saying it's as good as that game but it's a top quality production.

Best of all, all of these games are included on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection so you don't need a Genesis.

Swap NES with SNES and I would be in complete agreement with you.

I like both SNES and Genesis, but it's still no contest to me. SNES is my favorite console of all time while Genesis is simply a "really really good" console (maybe my fifth favorite).

JRPG is my favorite genre and it's hard to find a system with better RPGs than the SNES. I do adore Phantasy Star though.

One thing I never got used to was the Genesis controller. The three-in-a-row button design is horrible. Yeah, I know they released a 6-button controller but that was even more cluttered and maybe even worse. I've been playing Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection lately and it's amazing how much easier it is to play Genesis games with an Xbox 360 controller (just don't use the d-pad of course).

You guys watch James Rolfe's (AVGN's) video about this topic? My opinions are eerily close to his it would seem.

meh, he's a diehard Nintendo fan. Of course he can enjoy both consoles and he isn't a troll, but it was clear that on a lot of subjects his opinion wasn't really neutral. Specially the software section where he compared genres and he gave the victory on some categories to the SNES even though the Mega Drive did them better.

But still an interesting video.

BTW I get where you are coming from, the SNES was really the golden console for JRPGs (with the PS1 coming second, but I felt that PS1 JRPGs took themselves too seriously (probably cause FF7 started the "emo" fashion for JRPG protagonists). But they are so freaking expensive to collect

Someone should release on modern consoles an SNES JRPG collection
