Yes.

SOF is one of if not the best fps on the DC. The violence is graphic, the control smooth and precise, the loading times are looooooooong though, but worth it.

Seriously, you can drink a beer and if you imbibe smoke a bowl during the loading scenes. But again, worth the wait. You blow off a leg of an enemy and he'll hop on what he has left until you finish him. And don't let the train level frustrate you. It gets better, trust me.

yeah loadtimes have never been something that bother me in games. And funny you should mention Luke, as basically when I'm playing Half-Life the load bar simply means "take another gulp of beer."

Check out all the home brew add on levels. Some are pretty good, a few even made it to the Dreamcast as self booting levels. PC Gamer put out a Zombie Conversion called They Hunger using the Half Life Engine that also got a Dreamcast conversion. The PC version has tons of home brew and commercial conversion add on levels.

Just found a Half Life mod that even puts out a clothing line advertising their level.

I actually downloaded They Hunger last October. It's really excellent in my opinion.

Nice.

The load bar in SOF means "Finish your beer, go to the bathroom and read a comic, grab another beer and maybe wait another minute". I may or may not be kidding.

noiseredux wrote: But here's why I did... FPS. I'm terrible at FPS games. The controls have never made sense to me once the genre moved beyond the simplicity of Doom. Keyboard/Mouse never clicked for me. And even dual-analog sticks made me feel like an idiot -- you should see me fumble with Borderland. I'm kind of shocked to say that the DC controller setup actually makes the most sense to me for some odd reason. Left (only) stick is how you aim. The four face buttons make you move (so it's just Up, Down, Left, Right) ... I think that not having two sticks makes me avoid confusing one for the other. I don't know.
How is that even possible? If you cant play FPS games with a mouse, then you can't enjoy playing many of the most immersive and athmospheric games of all time like Half Life 2, Amnesia and Portal. As far as online FPS gaming goes, gamepads got nothing on keyboard&mouse combination.

How does Half Life work on DC controller? Right trigger=shoot Left trigger=crouch <- and -> on the D pad change weapons and up on the D pad jumps? Not being able to jump and aim at the same time doesn't sound very good, there is a lot of platforming (and dying because of missing a jump) in HL1.
It's kind of ironic that Dreamcast is pretty much the only console where you CAN plug in a keyboard and mouse for FPS games, but you prefer the Dreamcast controller :)
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I don't know what Amnesia is, but HL2 and Portal are both on consoles.

This is a preference though. One of comfort.
How does Half Life work on DC controller?

Left stick = aim/look
Face buttons = move (up, down, left, right)
Right trigger = shoot
DPad = crouch, jump, use, change weapons

It sounds strange at first, but I got comfortable with it really really fast. It's weird. It's kind of similar to a southpaw setup really I guess.

Anyway, I talked a bit about it in my blog post on Quake III Arena: http://www.rfgeneration.com/blogs/noise ... a-2252.php

Well for platforming jump is up on DPad and moving forward is one of the face buttons. It's really easy to do this.

If by comfort you mean speed and accuracy, then I agree with you.

I heard it's no good if you play single-player.

Noise, if you like playing FPS games with a controller better than keyboard/mouse, you may want to give the PS2 version of Half-Life a shot (ba-dum tish) as well. Better framerate and loading times than the DC version, plus exclusive content that remains exclusive to this day.
