He is just impatient like the rest of us for this gen to be considered retro already :P

I also agree with burningdoom.

King's Field wasn't a launch title... but it was still a good example of early graphics versus later ones.
It came out December 1994, the same month as the Playstation.

It came out about two weeks after the Japanese launch

a "launch game" is one available the same day as the console is released.

lulz. Not really as "launch games" are a specific batch, referring to the games you could buy Day One along with your console. But like I said, still a good example.

One thing that hasn't been discussed here is that the market could use the hyperbole surrounding the launch of new machines, and the ingress of money that could potentially encourage publishers to take risks and become ambitious.

Judging by the Wii U's spec, it's pretty hard to improve upon current consoles and retain a reasonable entry point. Sony are absolutely bonkers they might adopt the razor blade model for their next Playstation, but they're already losing tons of capital so it wouldn't make any business sense. The PS3 proved the futility of Sony's engineering ideology.

Go big or go home mentality??
 (FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

Nothing that drastic; it can be feasible to introduce a peculiar architecture without gambling with your foothold in the market, but I doubt Sony will go overboard since it makes zero business sense.

Nintendo is launching a console that is "comparable" to seven year old tech.. Will Sony and MS risk releasing $400+ consoles in this climate? From reports it seems the next Xbox has been finalised for quite some time. I guess we'd have to wait for a proper Unreal Engine 4 demo to judge the discrepancy in forthcoming rendering quality.
