When the school year ended, I was driving by the high school on days I was lazy and bought lunch and often saw kids walking home wearing dark hoodies with the hoods up despite it being 95 degrees and 80%+ humidity.Hazerd wrote:What's with hipsters wearing stocking caps in the middle of the summer... on a really hot day... i mean talk about being committed to your trend.

Re: hipster vs retro games. What's the differance?
I suppose hipsters are only into retro games insofar as they could glean something fashionable out of them. Where I'm from, people are plastering mosaics of Pac-man and Space Invaders onto tall arches of buildings as a form of graffiti - in other places they've either stickered (?) or spray-painted fruit from what I can only assume is Bubble Bobble.
There's a couple of bananas on bollards not far from my house - I should spare you all from the photos.
The public art looks pretty cool, but it doesn't seem to have much connection to the actual games at all. I know a couple of hipsters who talk about Escape From Monkey Island because of it's insult duelling - I suppose that's another good example of the intersection between hipsters/indie-kids and retro games. Another hipster/indie friend of mine is a huge SSB fanatic, he can conduct lengthy discussions on tactics and strategies!
I like to think there's a bit of hipsterness/indie-ness in old games - the music in the second level of Double Dragon 2 (could I drop a few more game references in here?) is some of the funkiest shizz I've ever laid ears on.

I'm just a gamer in general, and play games based on my personal tastes.
As for the question of "am I a hipster", I have no clue since "hipster" has various definitions.

I don't think painting pac man on a building is any more removed from gaming than hunting down prestine cardboard boxes, wearing a gaming tee, or posting on a gaming forum.
Its just a way to push ourselves away from those we feel superior to, cuz we are real gamers and such

I often get mistaken for a hipster. People always call me a hipster. im not. they think im a hipster because i play and collect retro games, listen to indie music, ride a bike, hate modern things, and only wear retro clothes. that does not make me a hipster. i am getting annoyed with it. oh but i do have a pair of black plastic framed glasses... but i usually wear contacts!

I own a pair of fully functional eyeballs, does that make me hip?

Yeah I know those from gamestop. My friend had one. These looked a little bigger and they werent as good as gamestops.3DSStrider wrote:I have a wallet that's shaped like a NES controller I got from Gamestop a few years ago. Re: hipster vs retro games. What's the differance?
See that's what I'm talking about. I have gotten some light between hipster's and retro gamers. See It's sad that this guy is just buying games just for his shelf and never will be played by a guy or girl who actually wants to play those games to enjoy the game. Plus him doing that and other people who does that makes one less copy of mario 3 out in the public to buy. Therefore the game value goes up. I just hope I'm wrong and this guy has a nintendo and enjoys the fun as much as I did as a kid and now.KDub wrote:I didn't read the rest of the thread but I have a good example about a hipster vs a retro gamer.
A guy came into the store I work at and was looking at NES games. He had his phone out, he had a list, and he was going through them pretty seriously. I thought to myself "Hey here is a guy my age who is really into this.", so naturally I tried to strike up some conversation.
That is when it became very obvious, he had no interest in discussing these games; he didn't even seem to know much about them or have any opinion on why he was buying them. He was buying them to just have them, he wanted a NES collection and that was it. I have my doubts that he even plays other classic games or even really plays video games at all. He was buying NES games like some kids have started buying vinyl or tapes again, because they are old and "ironically hip". Yes, I have seen kids come in to buy vinyl and admit to not having a record player, same idea applies here.
Hipster is a hugely over used word these days and has essentially replaced poser. I'm assuming this is what people mean most of the time.
