hipster vs retro games. What's the differance?

Post by mas »

Can someone tell me what's the differance between a retro gamer and a hipster? I see this word being used alot when it comes to retro gaming. I have my opinion but I want to ask before I share my opinion and piss people off

A hipster, by definition, is someone who only likes something because it's obscure as some kind of social gratification that is in no way related to the thing itself.

A retrogamer is someone who plays old games as a hobby. The definitions may overlap.

I think the hipster thing is overblown, though. And often overblown by those with only a passing knowledge of the subject.

I don't see the word hipster used that much. It does puzzle me that you think your opinion would piss people off. I mean, who would really care that much?

Hipsters are nerds who get invited to parties on a regular basis.

Retro gamers are people who no one knows about them outside their community?

Ijust dont want people to get mad at me thats all. I just think a retro gamer is someone who lived and played and bought the classic systems that they loved as a kid. Getting games that you can never get as a kid and playing them today to beat the game or buying games that you loved as a kid. I also believe that a retro gamer should have 2 or more retro systems and a current system to enjoy gamming today.

I'm 13, and my favorite systems were released before I was born. Does that mean I'm not a retrogamer?

I still don't think hipsters are anything more than an amalgamation of annoying faux-'artsy' type traits.
