I doubt that hipsters know that much about retro gaming. I think that they just like it to be "artsy" and "ironic".

I hated hipsters before it was cool.

Not all hipsters are retro gamers, but all retro gamers are hipsters. Hipsters like obscure, unpopular, and out of style things, which could include retro video games.
NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Xbox 360, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS Lite, DSi, GB, GBA SP, Dreamcast, and 2600.

But wouldn't "retro gaming" be too "mainstream" for "hipsters" right now?

The cool nerd has been a cliche for a few decades.

Re: hipster vs retro games. What's the differance?
I didn't read the rest of the thread but I have a good example about a hipster vs a retro gamer.
A guy came into the store I work at and was looking at NES games. He had his phone out, he had a list, and he was going through them pretty seriously. I thought to myself "Hey here is a guy my age who is really into this.", so naturally I tried to strike up some conversation.
That is when it became very obvious, he had no interest in discussing these games; he didn't even seem to know much about them or have any opinion on why he was buying them. He was buying them to just have them, he wanted a NES collection and that was it. I have my doubts that he even plays other classic games or even really plays video games at all. He was buying NES games like some kids have started buying vinyl or tapes again, because they are old and "ironically hip". Yes, I have seen kids come in to buy vinyl and admit to not having a record player, same idea applies here.
Hipster is a hugely over used word these days and has essentially replaced poser. I'm assuming this is what people mean most of the time.
