Because the storyline and graphic FMVs were more horrifying than any video game that had yet been released, head developer Kenji Eno resorted to a trick in order to get D published. The game was originally developed with no storyline, and Eno kept the story sequences a secret even from the other members of WARP. When the game was finished, he submitted a "clean" version (i.e. without the violent and disturbing story content of the complete version) for approval. He deliberately submitted the master late, knowing that part of the penalty was that he would have to deliver it by hand to the manufacturers in the USA. While on the plane ride to the USA, he switched the phony "clean" discs with the finalized discs, thus completely bypassing all censorship.[6]

Well, looks my AV cord stopped working less than a month after my N64's. It doesn't seem to be broken, but when I plug it in all I get are buzzing noises. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Insert clever quote here.

hello. I think this is the right thread to ask this, but, what's a good price range for a Japanese Saturn (HST-3220)? I'm thinking of getting one, and naturally, I don't wanna be overpaying. Rakuten/YahooJapan shops has them ranging from as low as 600yen (considered as untested 'junk') up to hefty 15,000yen (fully mint in-storage sets). I'm just lost on what's a fair value is for 'good' condition working systems are.

thanks

With Yahoo and most Rakuten shops (including ALL the ones that deal in "junk"), they won't ship outside of Japan and won't communicate in anything other than in Japanese. There are middleman companies that will do this for a charge, which of course racks up the price pretty quickly. With shipping, it is expensive.

Expect to be shelling out at least $100 when it's all said and done for a Saturn, 2 controllers, memory card, hook-ups and some common games.

IN Japan (junk=untested and maybe discoloured to varying degrees):
-junk Saturn: 300-1000yen
-junk controllers: 300-1000yen
-junk memory card: 100-1000yen
-power cord: 100-500yen
-AV cord: 100-500yen

Total: 1000-4000yen (good freaking luck on 1000yen)

Cheap common games: 100-1000yen each (some online ships might have some for under 100yen, but those run out quickly!)

So, total for a junk Saturn set-up with 10 games: 2000-6000yen, give or take (the lower end would involve a LOT of searching in the countryside, unless you luck out. The higher end it in a major city, and that is NOT in a place like Akihabara). Add in the price for getting around (gas/train) to these places, and you can add in another 2000yen minimum plus hours of time.

So, realistically, an online seller on a forum is going to sell something like this set up for 7500-10000yen (US$100, give or take... probably a bit more). That's WHEN they come up. You can try to use sea shipping to save money if you want. It'll still be around $50 for shipping. So... US$150 total is not unrealistic. Once you get done with the middleman services to use something like Yahoo Japan, you're looking at a similar price. Be aware that those online shops at Yahoo or Rakuten will ONLY send EMS in most cases (unless you can deal with an individual seller though Yahoo), so you'd be looking at around $200 or more in total including shipping.

In other words, if you buy from someone on a forum for $100 for a full lot, or maybe $40-50 for just a tested and working system (because once a "junk" system is tested, it is not "junk" anymore), you are paying a very fair price I think. Expect to pay a bit more, to be honest.

Of course, you could always use a middleman and buy a 600yen junk system. They'll charge you 800-2000 for the service, and you'll pay another 5000yen or whatever for shipping for just the unit. That's like $70 for a Saturn that MIGHT work at your door.

Hopefully that clears up a few things for you.

^oh, im very aware of proxy services (I use FromJapan), i pretty much bid on Y!JA almost every week (on misc stuff unrelated to gaming)...

but yeah, i'm well aware of the shipping fees, and that's not really a problem/issue for me (FJ has a system where you basically pay for one main international shipping fee for all the items you bough/won in auctions, service and domestic fees excluding).

there's a lot of people selling lots with all sorts of stuff (from extra controllers, to neat stuff like virtua sticks) that end at around 8k yen range... just wondering if what the prices i see are 'fair' these days, as with the case of retro games, prices fluctuate ridiculously sometimes, and i wanna avoid getting scalped, or getting real junk shells..

anyways thanks, so good to say, 'OK' units at around 5000 yen is a good base price?

also, sort of related as well, is it just me or do white saturns seem to yellow the hell a lot more than other consoles... i dunno what the situation is at japanese storages/stores/etc but even apparently 'well stored' units seem to yellow in obvious areas... anyone have experience with remedying that?

I think between you looking at the places that you do, and with my little explanation, you already know the answer. ;)

Eh, I don't know. I've seen a LOT of discoloured PC Engines, Famicoms, Super Famicoms, NES consoles, SNES consoles, Dreamcasts and stuff. I guess the FCs, SFCs and SNESs are the worst, followed by the NES and white Saturns. PC Engines are often discoloured, but at least you can get them pretty white again without too much trouble. Even grey Saturns discolour often. It's very common to see this at stores in Japan.

Don't believe those people who say things like "apparently tobacco is/was popular in Japan" for reasons that things yellow. That's a load of BS.

I'm not sure how easy it is to remedy. I know that it is easy to get a PCE looking good again. As for the rest, I've always figured it's just easier to get a new unit. The problem is with the anti-flammable chemical used in a lot of the plastics. You can use the "retro-bright" method, but that's just a pain. Other than that, it's not really something that is reversible.

That reminds me; there's a shit load of non-gaming stuff I need to look for on Yahoo Japan. Kids clothes! Has anyone ever seen a girl's pink Dragon Ball Z shirt? 8) My daughter is not quite two years old and she already knows how to throw a kamehameha.

Also, who is in your avatar? I think I recognize here, but maybe I'm mistaken.

so i just got a japanese saturn, for super cheap ($20)... sounds too good to be true, well, it has its flaws  major ones.

just see pic.

I dont even know if it works, because i dont have power and any sort of av cords with it. but i might as well get to cleaning this as much as possible, when i opened it up though i saw something strange.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1908672/saturn/DSC01137.JPG

there's a wire taped there for some reason, coming from the PSU to the other side to a smaller pcb (i'm new to saturns, i dunno what that pcb does)

anyone know what this is? the other pcb itself is just secured by tape, looks devious.

also there's this rattling sound in the body, upon opening up, this fell
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1908672/saturn/DSC01146.JPG

looks like it broke off something, but its plastic, so i assume its a non-issue.

anyways, any kind of help would be appreciated, also, if you look at the controller port, it looked like it puked orange rust thing, anyone know what it is? what caused it? and how to remove it? :p

again, newb here, sorry for the annoying questions, peace!

That will be a mod chip to allow burns. Not sure exactly the plastic bit would have been.
