Final Fantasy IV is my absolute favorite, and FFVI is right up there with it. FFIX is pretty good. Never gave FFVIII much of a chance. Can't really get behind FFII, mainly because of the odd battle system.

Rise from your grave! I completed Final Fantasy II; so, I wanted to update my list:

1. Final Fantasy VI - best combination of setting and gameplay; I absolutely love it
2. Final Fantasy V - excellent challenge and excellent gameplay
3. Final Fantasy VII - most intriguiing setting; decent gameplay
4. Final Fantasy VIII - second most intriguing setting; good story if you can decipher it
5. Final Fantasy X - best battle system
6. Final Fantasy II - great setting; original and enjoyable stat system; 8-bit version would likely be infuriating, however
6. Final Fantasy III - invented the job system; amazing for an 8-bit RPG
7. Final Fantasy I - short, simple, and fun to play through repeatedly
8. Final Fantasy IX - good...but thoroughly derivative and generally unmemorable
9. Final Fantasy IV - some people love it, but it just did not do it for me

Now that I have completed each of the first ten Final Fantasy games, I am interested in trying some of the sequels and bonus materials, particularly:

Soul of Chaos (Final Fantasy I)
Soul of Rebirth (Final Fantasy II)
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
Final Fantasy X-2

Am I missing any games? Which do you think I should try first?

The three SNES Advance ports have bonus dungeons, and in IV it lets you use a different party than the canonical one for fighting Zeromus.

If it weren't for the terrible audio quality, they'd be the definitive versions

Thanks! I have the advance versions of each, but I am not sure I want to go back through each game quite yet just for a bonus dungeon. (If I do, it will be my fourth time through Final Fantasy VI...) I may give IV another chance though. Is the bonus dungeon available in the PSP version? If so, I may give that version a shot. (Not that I have a PSP...but I am thinking of getting one.)

Of what I have played...

1. VII
2. IX
3. VI
4. XII
5. V
6. IV
7. Crisis Core
8. VIII
9. X

I haven't played any or enough of I, II, III, XIII or any of the other spinoffs to have much of an opinion.

Dsheinem's favorite is VII?

Interesting... I wouldn't have expected that.

Final Fantasy VI is indeed divisive.

Yes, the PSP version is based on the GBA version, so it has all the GBA content.
