Are you impressed by the newest best graphics anymore?

I was impressed with graphics when we saw the change from PSX---> Dreamcast, anything after that doesnt really excite me anymore.

I think that SNES/GEN to PSX/N64 was a lot bigger leap, Saturn and Dreamcast were kind of "1.5" consoles between generations. There are some very impressive 3D titles in both Saturn and Dreamcast libraries though, there were a lot of PS1 games ported to Dreamcast that didn't really showcase the systems capabilities.

Here are graphics from survival horror games. Resident evil 2 (Playstation, 1998), Blue Stinger (Dreamcast, 1999) and Silent Hill 2 (Playstation 2, 2001). Although D2 is probably a better example of a Dreamcast horror game.

I do think it's a good question though, we're not wowed as much as we would have been at one time. There isn't as much room for the huge graphical jumps like we used to see in console generations.

I've heard it argued that Dreamcast could've handled anything that the Ps2 could, but the system didn't really last long enough for people to really push it in that way so who knows.

Didnt Dreamcast sell untill 2007 in Japan though? Or was it mainly used for homebrew visual novels at that point? I think that many of those PS1 conversions that didn't look any better on DC actually harmed DC's reputation in a way...
I've heard that Gamecube was more powerful than PS2 despite all the bad rep it got. Well, it's year 2012 and the PS2 is STILL alive while all it's competitors have perished a long time ago

Such a shame it didn't attract much developers because it was labeled as a "kiddy console". With a better selection of games, how damn awesome it would have been? Small cute portable cube with a handle and 4 controller slots=perfect.

On occasion I see something with graphics that blow me away. I'm personally more impressed by the use of bright, neon colors and black together than anything, but we don't see that often. Although it is somewhat sick for me to think about, I'm also impressed by increased realism in gore that we see, although it has yet to hit the point that I feel we've gone to far.

Animation still holds back that extra bit of oomph we need.

It was greatly lacking in the number of western game ports. It didn't get any GTA games, and a lot of western developers did not support it

Yes, that is a big problem. Hand drawn animation gives the games a unique feelings too.


BTW those difference between RE4 on Gamecube and PS2

I still remember how much I was impressed with Fox's fur in Starfox Adventures.



What I would really like to see is believably destructable buildings. When you level a building in Battlefield 1943 the pieces just vanish into thin air in an instant. I want the rubble to stay so I can use them as cover, or they are an obstacle I have to get over. But most of all I want to see them collapse realistically (in real time).

Red Faction Guerrilla did a good enough job of that. But I want to see it with more buildings

I'm all about aesthetics. The technical aspects of graphics interest me a bit, but at the end of the day the games simply need to look good.

I'm partial to the hand-drawn anime style. My favorite graphics of all time are found in 1990s PC Engine/Saturn games like Valis, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Ys I-IV. Late era SNES titles like Chrono Trigger, FFVI, and Earthbound look fantastic too. As far as modern games go, I prefer 2D graphics and bright cheery colors. Eternal Sonata and Muramasa are the best looking 7th gen games, in my humble opinion.

I generally dislike "realistic" graphics and uncanny valley character models. The visuals in games like Crysis 2 and Gears of War 3, while technically impressive, don't excite me at all. And I despise game trailers that show absolutely no gameplay, just cutscene wankery (ie: almost everything at E3 this year).
