Disclaimer:
This thread is NOT ABOUT graphics not being important to a game's enjoyment and gameplay being the most important thing.
This thread is NOT ABOUT stylized graphics (ala Mario Galaxy, TF2) looking better than the most realistic graphics out there.
What this thread is about, is how much the latest graphics can keep on impressing?
I mean, are you really impressed by the newest best graphics in games anymore? Sometimes when I see a huge draw distance like Just Cause 2 I think "woow", but that is it. I see people complain about games with "average" graphics, but to me all of them are like that. Cause we have gotten to the point where the models and textures are veeeeeeeeeeery detailed, but they still look very far from real (gee, I wonder why).
On the other hand I don't see why a bit older graphics are bad. They look the same to me. Neither one is convincing so why should I care if one is more blocky than the other?
Basically I feel that technology is very limited when it comes to where it can go from now on (mostly cause of cost, not cause of processing power which keeps increasing), so I feel like it's a waste of time to try and get me to believe that this game looks even MORE realistic cause you just can't. It's impossible. You can't impress me. I've turned into a graphics cynic.
I don't know if I have expressed what I am trying to talk about well, but guys please try not to derail this thread into "graphics don't matter" and ect.
I'm just asking if anyone who likes seeing pretty graphics is actually impressed anymore.

I occasionally find things interesting, but the vast majority of the time it's due to artistic design more than technical prowess. Very little that's actually out is pushing the envelope. I think if things were a bit more PC centric we might see more that really stands out on release, but with most stuff being designed around the 360...not so much.
There's still a lot of ways graphics can impress, and some of them actually save work. The Unreal Engine 4 demo illustrating real time lighting, for example, makes things far simpler for the developer, and more realistic for the player to boot.

PS3 and Xbox 360 are starting to be very outdated and limited in this regard when compared to PCs actuallyZeroAX wrote:

I'm more impressed by artistic design, as Isiolia said.
Beyond that, if I'm just looking at some really realistic or standout graphics, my reaction usually boils down to "Wow, that looks really good!" after which I promptly forget about it for the rest of the game.
So, I guess that I am impressed sometimes, but at the same time I'm not hard to please and it gets very little of my attention either way.

Sure, have you seen some of those tech demos floating around? That Unreal Engine 4 one certainly impresses the hell out of me.
We're at the end of the console generation, of course we've pretty much plateaued at how nice games on this generation of hardware can look. Hell, we kinda plateaued a few years back. PC on the other hand though, there's still a LOT of room for improvement.

Very much so.
I believe there is a correlation between "being impressed with graphics" and age. I grew up with Missile Command, Pac-Man, and games like Defender that I am still impressed with. But the graphics these days are bewildering to me.
Even the graphics in Child of Eden have me saying "wow" every time I play.
Then again I'm also one of those guys who could sit around and watch the cows graze in Red Dead Redemption for a half hour.

It's all in the art style as others said. I think Xenoblade is visually one of the most impressive games I've seen this entire gen, and it's on the Wii. It's all in the creativity and art, not exactly how shiny things can be more often than not.
