Oh yeah! I forgot about Lawnmower man. I totally thought Virtual Reality was the way of the future, but it still hasn't caught on. Part of me still believes it will have a comeback. I also imagined a place where your virtual characters would meet and hangout and I thought that would be really cool, but Second Life and the PSN's Home surprisingly have been of little interest to me.

I'm also still waiting for the Holodeck, but after playing the Kinect, I think I'll be too lazy for it and just whine that Holodeck games don't have controller support.

I used to think along the same lines as the OP. I thought that we'd be able to control a character in a movie or cartoon.

Yeah, I totally assumed I'd be able to have that. Especially since I remember that in the 90s, there were all kinds of "virtual reality" accessories like goggles or a vest that would let you 'feel' games, paired with controllers like the Sega Activator... of course now I know that these things didn't magically make 16 bit games seem like reality. But when I was a kid, it seemed so awesome!

I never thought about it at all. I never thought about the future in any capacity as I kid. I lived in the moment, which is easy to do when you feel like you have all the time in the world
