When you were a kid, what did you think games would become?

When you were a kid, what did you think games would become?

Post by J T »

I used to think video games would one day look just as real as TV shows, which has almost happened, but still has work to get there.

I used to think I might be able to watch TV, but then control it if I wanted to, like a drop in and play at any point kinda thing, which obviously hasn't really happened.

I used to want to be able to use my toys to control my games, which I guess Skylanders does, but I don't play with toys anymore, so I don't really care about this now, though I'm happy for the kids that are able to enjoy it in this generation.

I also really wanted to be able to control a cartoon. I was in love with Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, and Cliffhanger back then, but they weren't very fun. I wanted to have full control over my character. It's looking like that dream will actually come true once Ni No Kuni comes out.

What did you want games to do when you were young?

I figured they'd become like the Playstation 9.

I didn't really think about it much to be honest.

Pretty much where they are now, but with more innovation because I hadn't been made a cynic yet.

There's always BlazBlue if you want to play a cartoon.

I started gaming in the 3D age so I just figured there would be more realism, more detail, etc. I knew there'd be more BS and online stuff too ;) I was old fashioned from the start.

Back in '95 I remember being blown away by the final boss battle(s) in Final Fantasy VI and thinking "holy shit I can't imagine how amazing Final Fantasy games will be 15 years from now!"

Me neither, back then it was just freakin' video games, it wasn't like "omg this is so lame 'cause it's not real enough".

I imagined giant mega-arcades that would allow linked play with people taking on various roles in large battlefields. Giant rooms filled with 50 battle pods.

I also believed that a relationship between console and arcade versions of games would have been in full swing. Buy a smaller version of the game on your console, build your character and take them with you via VMU like device to your nearest arcade to compete with others.

Back then i use to think the original playstation was the pinnacle of graphics.
It was able to do 3d polygons and the lives movie cutscene convince me that this is as far as console graphics could go, boy was i wrong lol.
