So, I've got a question.
Big box or CD Jewel?
I actually prefer the jewel cases. Storing those awesome big boxes can be a bitch. They don't even fit on half the bookcases I see without taking out a shelf.

BIG Box.
The boxes (especially the huge 90s-early 00s boxes) have a deluxe presence. These game packaging beasts make me feel like my money is well spent. It's a similar reason as to why I like vinyl records.

Big boxes! I love those stupid things. The few I have look cool on my shelf and I think I enjoy the retarded aspect that all they hold is a manual and one jewel case.

Re: Remembering DOS-era gaming (giant jpg)
What's the point of having games if you don't have cardboard boxes???
Nah, but if I really like having the boxes and manuals around, I get a lot of joy just by looking at them and reading the manuals.
Concerning space, I'm not very worried about it, I'm more worried about those boardgames whose boxes are twice bigger than they needed to be. All the games I want will only take a shelf by themselves, so no biggie.

I can't get Alien Carnage/Halloween Harry to work.
When I launch it, it fails with an error message saying one of the files is missing, but it IS there. Maybe it's damaged? I guess I'll try downloading it again, perhaps from another source.
Abuse seems really fun, but the music isn't working for me.
I see no options other than to adjust music/sfx levels, so I have no idea what to do to get the sound working. Any one have any ideas?
I can't get the mouse to work in Doom95.
How can Doom Collector's Edition be so broken that they didn't include the damn mouse driver! I'm using a PS/2 mouse with Win98SE, so from what I've read, I should be able to get it to work. But no success yet. I'll try again today though.

I'm pretty sure there's some legal fluke that makes Abuse freeware, but the music is not. To get the music working, I'm pretty sure you actually have to hunt down a disc copy of the game.Ziggy587 wrote:Abuse seems really fun, but the music isn't working for me.I see no options other than to adjust music/sfx levels, so I have no idea what to do to get the sound working. Well that's a shame, because it seems like a really awesome game but playing with music is no fun. Looks like disc-only copies are ~$5 or so, so I'll definitely be picking up a copy. I just have to decide if I wanna pay more for a box and instructions.
Thanks for the heads up though!

Abuse is great! Side scroll with the keyboard while using the mouse to aim and shoot around the character. To get a taste of the game, there is a Flash game called Alias that plays similar.Ziggy587 wrote:Well that's a shame, because it seems like a really awesome game but playing with music is no fun. I played the first two levels of Abuse, and it's totally awesome. That's very unique, using the arrow keys to move and jump but the mouse to aim. Though with no sound, it's just not enjoyable. I'm definitely gonna pick up a copy soon though.
Re: Remembering DOS-era gaming (giant jpg)
No sounds or just no music? There should be at least sound effects. Maybe you need to set up the Soundblaster IRQ settings in the game menu. Don't forget to set up the Soundblaster params in AUTOEXC.BAT as well. That is unless you are using DOSBox.Ziggy587 wrote:I played the first two levels of Abuse, and it's totally awesome.
