My favorite is IV of course, least favorite is probably XII or XIII, but I barely consider them Final Fantasy to begin with. Same with the MMOs and most of the spin-offs. A friend described FF XII perfectly; it's a game that plays itself. I didn't find it enjoyable at all. Honestly I very much liked the first 10 and couldn't pick a least favorite, they're all great and very enjoyable in one way or another.
IX is the one I've gone back to the least, I've beaten the first ten 2-3 times at least but have only finished IX once. I've been meaning to replay it for years now but for some reason haven't yet.

Ten, if only because I can't get over the fact that the creators wrote a detailed fantastic world only to trample it with a guy that fights with beachballs. What the hell, man.

Re: Worst/Least Favorite Final Fantasy Game?
Aww man, I loved IX. I really thought it brought their roots back, while still feeling modern. I prefer it over VII and VIII.
XII was weird. It COULD play itself, but if you only set your two teammates to auto and played the game, it could actually be pretty tough. Yiazmat was a really fun fight. That being said, if you figured out how to break it, it was pretty dull. Not as dull as VIII, but still pretty boring. The characters were terrible!!!
I had a hard time getting into IV, only because when I was young, sidequests and ridiculous harder-than-the-last-boss bosses were what I thought FF was about. Coming back to it now, it reminds me much more of Lunar than FF, as it really tells a story, but does not let you choose a party.
I agree that its hard to consider XII and XIII in the same series as X and prior. They just do not have that FF feel, and most of the original team was gone by that point.
I dunno what it was about II, but I thought that game was terrible. And I enjoyed I and III.
@General Norris: Weird characters was FF staple though! I thought Wakka was the shit. If Yuna and Lulu would have been more interesting, and if Kimahri hadn't been a ditto character, I think the game would have been perfect. I do think X told the best story, maybe aside VI.
Its hard to beat VI. That game hass some moments that left my jaw on the floor.

I didn't even get there! I mean, I could kind of accept the best character in the game throwing balls to the boss but once I got to the UNDERWATER BALL THROWING my mind couldn't take it anymore.

Re: Worst/Least Favorite Final Fantasy Game?
Its weird how I can agree on some of this post and disagree on the rest. I liked the more political final fantasy tactics esque story of XII. X I thought had a fairly weak and weird story. I didn't feel compelled to care about the characters and didn't like the world much. The sin thing to me wasn't interesting. I also disliked wakka and yuna irritated me often.dunpeal2064 wrote:Aww man, I loved IX. I really thought it brought their roots back, while still feeling modern. I prefer it over VII and VIII.

Re: Worst/Least Favorite Final Fantasy Game?
See, I do not like political stories, which is definitely why I did not get into XII.
I think I just loved X because it was so weird. I was just as confused as Titus when I started the game out, and there were some cool twists. Not to mention that they ended that game perfectly (imo) by not pleasing everyone. I like the characters to either be really awesome, or really stupid. To me, XII's characters were just.... bleh. Non-memorable.
I'm weird though, I like trippy stories and goofily dressed men-women with huge swords and beachball weilding Benders and such. XII was just no Japanese enough for me
I started playing through X again, as my gf had never seen any of it and was interested, and she is more into this than any other rpg I have showed her, aside Persona 4.
Yuna was really weak, as was Lulu and Kimhari. I loved Rikku, Auron, Wakka, and Tidus though.
I also hated Amarant and Eiko in IX, Cait Sith in VII, Irvine and Selphie in VIII.... but I just didn't even care enough about the characters in XII to hate them. I don't even remember their names, and I put 180 hours into the game.

Re: Worst/Least Favorite Final Fantasy Game?
VI is actually my favorite game of all time. I think it's vastly better than any other game in the series.
The worst would have to be the MMOs, XI and XIV. They are absolutely tedious and miserable. X, XII, and XIII are very weak games too.
The only Final Fantasy games I enjoy these days are the spin-offs: 4 Heroes of Light, the two Crystal Chronicles DS games, and the recent DS/PSP remakes are all quite good. I don't have much faith in the main series anymore.
One last thing... Mystic Quest kicks ass. I never understood all the hate for it.

Re: Worst/Least Favorite Final Fantasy Game?
I just want to say that a bad Final Fantasy game is not a bad video game per se.
I prefer the SNES Final Fantasy games myself, except Mystic Quest.
The MMO games are really sh*tstains on the Final Fantasy main series. I still can't get over the fact that they launched it under the main series. Why? They could have easily turned into a side series like for instance Final Fantasy Worlds or Final Fantasy Online or Final Fantasy Universe.
FFI started the series and laid a foundation but hasn't aged all that well. II was an failed experiment in the gameplay department, but on all other aspects it really showed the improvements over FFI (cough music cough). Final Fantasy III was a sign of many great things to come.
VII and IX are amazing games, VIII is not as terrible as everyone says.
X, XII, XIII are not fantastic Final Fantasy games, but great videogames nonetheless.
IDEA
Square Enix should launch an 2D RPG sub series to Final Fantasy. RPGs in the style of IV-V-VI with the ATB battle system. If it doesn't stick with gamers, they just stop the sub series. If it sells millions they could turn the next game in the main FF series - FFXV - into a 2D RPG.
