Exactly. Just because you can get good on a bad input method doesn't suddenly make it good. I didn't have to "get good" with the 360 controller, and I use it primarily to play Bullet Hell shooters, which require pretty precice movement in all directions, in slow taps and large sweeps.
Imo its far better than any Sony or Nintendo D-Pad, at least as far as shmups are concerned.
I have never tried to play fighters with it though, so I don't know how good it is at recognizing quarter-circles and such.
