My take on xbox 360 controller and fighting games (and T&A)

Post by JC48573 »

I hear a lot of people complain about how the 360 controller is bad for fighting games because the D pad doesn't register your inputs correctly. I want to go ahead and debunk this lol. Well, not sure if debunk is the right word, but whatever. Yes, when you start off playing with a 360 controller you will encounter these problems where you can't properly execute or move your character around, but if you put more time into a fighting game like Dead or Alive (yea, I will get into the T&A later) you will realize that it requires different way of controlling the d pad and by that I mean is developing a pressure sensitive thumb. The more pressure you add on the dpad the less likely it will listen to you. I will go ahead and say that 360 controller is designed for beginners learning an extra step to get into advance level, while playstation controller jumps right into intermediate level already from the get go.

Moving on to the T and A

I'm a huge fan of Dead or Alive mainly for its gameplay and also the oversexualized direction of the characters. I think the "art direction" really enhances the game by adding a bit of fan service, so there are times I wonder why some journalists would make deem that as inappropriate. In all honesty, I really don't see why girls would even be offended by this. I guess it all depends how guys look at girls and I definitely have no problem looking at hot girls showing some cleavage/boombox just for the sake of entertainment. It's a form of appreciating what women have that makes men like us so attracted to them. Aside from that, I'm glad I bought a 360 just for Dead or Alive. I will continue to main Leon, Hitomi, and Lei Fang.

I love the the 360 controller but there's no denying the horrid design of the dpad. No matter how you dice it, it's crap. The dpad on the DualShock, though better than the 360, isn't perfect either. With the Vita, Sony has created a dpad worthy of 2D games (hopefully they'll carry this over with their next DualShock iteration). Back to the 360 dpad, if you're serious about fighters and don't play on traditional sticks, you're best bet is to look at Hori's excellent EX2.

I once read about a simple mod where you dremel out the D pad's hole. The bigger hole would make it possible to push the D pad further down enabling more responsive controls. The mod would hardly be noticeable too...

Anyone ever tried this mod?...

EDIT Found a more advanced version of this mod here...

I hope you guys really read my post. Like I said, you can actually become good at using the 360 controller. It just requires a bit of practice and a bit of time.

I do, however, play on sticks.

Maybe yes. In that case consider this a possible fix for people that don't get used to the D pad...

The Xbox 360 d-pad is too stiff for my liking. I don't even like it very much for shmups nevermind fighters.

Microsoft and Sony should just rip off the Saturn d-pad. Although, as mentioned, the Vita d-pad is very nice.

Of course we did - having to practice the use of a dpad suggests the quality of said dpad. It should feel natural and responsive (like the Saturn's) and not require anything more than that.

I always knew that the D-pas was terrible on the 360, but it was when I got Mortal Kombat that it drove me crazy! I always missed special moves, Fatalties were almost impossible! I tried the DIY mods mentioned here, sanding out the ring around the pad, opening up the controller and placing a piece of circular plastic under the pad. Nothing offered a huge improvement, thats when I decided to try out the 360 controller with the "Transforming D-pad" and that was what made all the difference. Moves became much more consistant, and it felt less mushy, of course, about this time I learned to use arcade sticks instead of controllers for fighters and never looked back.
