Bought a PVM monitor, now I need cables!
Re: Bought a PVM monitor, now I need cables!
Sorry to piggyback on this thread but I'm looking to join team PVM-- would this cable only work on a PAL Genesis?

Yes you should be set with that one. The cable is titled for "Mega Drive", meaning Europe or Asia. We only had "Genesis" or CDX in The US. Make sure you have the model one version which the cable is made for. Also, depending on your monitor, you will need a scart-->rgb cable or converter for US screens. The PVM I picked up has RGB support, so I just got the cable to bypass the rgb signal for now. The converter boxes allow the signal to be converted to component and work on regular televisions without scart pinout.
I already got all my scart cables, and my rgb cable should be here in the next two weeks. I will post pictures when all of it is ready to rock.

Hmm. Like I said before, let me know how it goes. I'm just not entirely sure if it will work without the ext. sync port in use. Hopefully having only the the R, G, and B signals in use will be sufficient to show a picture.

The one cable I ordered showed up yesterday, but I had to get a female/female scart coupler for them. If the current option does not work, a member on the neo-geo forums is selling female scart to bnc cables he made

Hope the cables worked out for you. I just recently got my PVM/RGB setup up and running so I thought I'd share a couple comparison photos.
First is through the composite connection.

Second is RGB.

I'm sorry, I didn't find much with a quick search, but what are these PVMs?
Re: Bought a PVM monitor, now I need cables!
They're commercial monitors, normally found in broadcasting studios and hospitals, that have RGB inputs in the back (rarely found in the states). I call mine "my big ugly box." You can pick them up for cheap on craigslist if you're patient. The difference in display quality between it and a normal CRT, even when comparing composite or s-video connections, is striking.

Ahh cool. Thanks.

Genesis v1 supports SCART. You should be using that instead of s-video. You've never seen Sonic until you've seen him in RGB. Grab a PVM > SCART (BNC) adapter and a Genesis SCART cable (the one w/ headphone stereo) from retrogamingcables and you're all set.
Also, PVM's have no comb filter for composite, so it looks like shit. If you need to use composite (i.e. for NES), get something like this (ignore the rack):

I wouldn't say that all PVM's were created equal. Composite actually looks cleaner than some of my other TVs.
