My first sega memory with foxhound; we hit a thrift store and he saw a lonely Genesis on a shelf, so he drug it over and said, "Honey can you see how much it is?" So after much whining by him, I ask the lady and she said a dollar. i figured i would get it for him, that way he would leave my nes alone.
My first sega memory was playing mortal kombat with my bf's brother the cart they had was missing chunks of plastic and scotch taped together but still worked great.

Beating Sword of Vermillion for the Genesis.
When I was seven, it was an amazing game. Haven't played it in 15 years -- I hope it's still awesome.

One of several (I'll spread them out): Finding a Nomad rechargeable Battery Pack on clearance at Wal-Mart for $20. This had to be about 1997-98 way after it and genesis games were off store shelves.

Re: Favorite Sega memory/purchase
I was hella excited about the Dreamcast as soon as I heard about it, and then saw the first photos of Sonic Adventure in a game mag (can't remember the name). I was super juiced, and the news of the PS2 coming out didn't persuade me one bit to hold off on getting a Dreamcast asap.
I bought the console that I still play to this day on the launch day, 9-9-99. I remember it like it was yesterday. I got two controllers, Sonic Adventure and Power Stone, and couldn't wait to get home and play them. My brother and I played Power Stone for hours. Fuckin' good times. Sonic Adventure blew my mind. I think I beat it in 4-5 days.
This is both my favorite SEGA purchase and memory.

LOL! That's a new one on me! My first internet username was "virtualgameboy", but that was too long and hard to type. It evolved from just "vgb" to incllude my real name.Key-Glyph wrote:robbievgb: This is totally random, but I thought I'd tell you that every time I see your username I read it as "Roy G. Biv."

Another favorite Sega memory:
When the same Wal-Mart mentioned above was clearing out their genesis stock, they literally just put all the games in one of their classic giant bins in the middle of the electronics section and marked them all at $5 each. We had a N64 but we still played the Genesis a lot and had a Nomad we loved, so my parents stocked up on something like 10+ games and gave them to us one by one throughout the year. Never seen a big retail store do a deal like that since. Probably around the same time as the last story (97-98).

I still remember very well both the Genesis 3 and the "Sega 16 Bit" which looked like the model 1 Genesis still being sold in stores like K Mart throughout 98 and into '99. Although, I do think my local Target had stopped stocking Genesis games before they stopped with the SNES. I remember buying a lot of new Snes games in '98 because I didn't get mine until the model 2 came out in '97.robbievgb wrote:LOL! That's a new one on me! Nights: into Dreams is actually the game that got me interested in gaming, the displays for it were all over Target and most stores that summer when it came out. I was 7 but turning 8 very soon and wanted a Saturn bad for my birthday that year. But, there was no way I could get a $400 dollar system. So, I got a Genesis for $15 from a friend of my neighbor's with Sonic 2 and Jungle Strike. I think because of the cost of the next gen systems the Genesis was definitely the most popular system at school still in '96 and still was really until Ocarina of Time came out. I remember going to one friend's house and getting to play Saturn and Playstation but not really caring that I didn't have them because I enjoyed the Genesis so much and all my really close friends had the Genesis, so we could lend each other games. Games were cheap enough to be able to run out to Funcoland and local video stores and get a whole bunch every few weeks. Kids would always have Genesis game boxes in their backpacks to show off at school, or because they were taking them to a friend's house that afternoon. The only other systems that had any kind of community around them like that for me were the SNES and the Game Boy. And the only reason the Game Boy ever did was because everyone was playing Pokemon in 98-99.

Re: Favorite Sega memory/purchase
I was a Nintendo kid growing up: had a NES, SNES, and Game Boy. My brother got a Genesis one Christmas and eventually got the Sonic games, Streets of Rage, and a few others. I remember playing it every now and then and enjoying it. Compared to the Nintendo consoles the Genesis was like the strange edgy system with techno-ish music and colorful games.
I had a friend in elementary school and we used to have the typical Nintendo vs. Sega arguments on the playground. I sided with Nintendo, he was a Sega dude. I remember one day telling him about all the amazing JRPGs that were SNES exclusives: Chrono Trigger, FFIV and VI, Secret of Mana, etc. Checkmate! He would have no rebuttal to that... or so I thought. The next day he brought in an article (from GamePro or something) all about the Phantasy Star games. The screenshots looked gorgeous and I remember being so upset that these games weren't available on the SNES.
I never ended up buying a Sega system of my own until a couple years ago. But now I have a Master System, Game Gear, Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I love all of them. Except for the 32X.
