Games that Pushed the Limits of SNES - Forum help plz

Post by RadarScope1 »

OK guys we have a "limits" article going up about the SNES in the future. We've written something about the following games, but I'm looking for others that might warrant an honorable mention or maybe ones that deserves a full entry that we've criminally overlooked. Maybe Racket has some more to add to the list on his part; I don't know. Here's the list so far in no particular order:

StarFox
F-Zero and Mario Kart
Axelay
Donkey Kong Country (series)
Yoshi's Island
Super Castlevania 4
Secret of Mana
Stunt Race FX
Contra 3
Super R-Type and Gradius 3
MegaMan X2 and X3
Street Fighter II (series)
Street Fighter Alpha 2

What did I miss and why should we mention it?

BTW this is my last post until at least July 22 - I'm on vacation, baby. Peace.

Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean.

Both huge carts, with lots of compressed music/voice acting.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

Killer Instinct - similar to the DKC series
Realm - late title that had some better looking sprites, backgrounds, light effects
Dracula X - heat shimmering effect

Not sure if these are what you're looking for/how much they pushed the system

I don't think Mario Kart should be in.

Maybe in games that redefined the SNES but sure not in games that pushed the limits imho.

Plus the statement that you want to show is already covered enough with F-Zero being in.

Sorry my English

Out of This World should definetly be on their, the cutscenes and animations of characters moving were absolutely perfect.

Also you should mention the SNES versions of Doom and Wolfestein 3D since those were pretty revolutionary no matter which console it's ported to.

I'd pick R-Type III: The Third Lightning over Super R-Type; the sequel makes much more prevalent use of scaling and rotation effects (and even some use of polygons, if I'm not mistaken).

Mario Kart definitely pushed the limits more than F-Zero did. Kart used the DSP chip to enhance the Mode 7 graphics; F-Zero used Mode 7, but had no enhancement chip.

Also, I think Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars should be on the list. It took advantage of the SA-1 which provided Memory Mapping, Increased RAM capacity, a higher clock speed, and more. Plus it was the first (only?) RPG for SNES to use 3D graphics from SGI. (SGI did the 3D in the Donkey Kong County series)

i'm glad to see stunt race fx included. it was a nice little novelty to the snes, because the control is completely clunky and broken, but i remember enjoying it and looking back it was probably just because it was in 3D
