Snes games : a PAL question.

Post by insideinfo »

Will UK-released SNES games work on European systems? If I buy a game from England and try to play it on my European Super Nintendo console, will it work? I know Europe is all PAL but I'm asking because a NES game I once bought from the UK didn't play on my NES. And so I learned about PAL-a and PAL-b and their incompatibility.
I only recently bought a SNES and I'm scared to buy games from the UK because I suspect they are incompatible. :(

Hi,

cannot help on the specific console, but I have two UK games for my PSOne and a UK game for my sega master system, I live in Germany and they all run.

Yep the should do. If you have any concerns though then as long as your SNES has coloured face buttons and a rounded design (in contrast to purple and boxy) and the games arecurved on the corners (instead of square) then you should be fine as they are PAL.

followup question: What about France? i know they have SECAM over there so do they use Pal-systems too? I sometimes see a Snes advertised as SECAM by french sellers but i suspect they're wrong. Can you play any european released game on a french nintendo system and vice versa?

Wow I have never heard of SECAM before, its difficulty to know if the SECAM technology affects the game carts exactly. I can't imagine that they would though, the console would just have different outputs at the back. I don't think that Nintendo would have (/gone to the effort of) altering the carts for such a minority. I mean they hardly went out of their with dcent PAL release dates.

Sorry but you'll have to do some additional research. :)

All PAL games work on all PAL consoles. It's a universal standard for PAL and compatible technologies. It's not really that hard...
