Not sure what is worse, no used games next Gen or all these rehashes of the same game...
The good news (for me anyways) is there is enought games in my backlog, along with all of the amazing last-gen and pre last-gen games, that if another good game never came out, I could still play the rest of my days enjoying games that have already been released.
Are all games rehashes now days?

This is true. Demon's Souls was fresh though!

It's us (the consumers) that say it's okay. I don't like it, and you obviously don't either. The blame can only be lightly placed on the publishers though.brunoafh wrote:If you think it's okay for developers/publishers to milk franchises, intentionally avoid innovation, and saturate (and ultimately control) the market then I don't really know what to say to you.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:What problem?
When people stop buying Call of Duty and DLC, they'll stop producing Call of Duty and DLC.
Besides, this is nothing new as JMustang pointed out.
How dare publishers produce games that sell to a large and willing audience!

Someone explain to me how disliking new video games makes one "grognardy." Lots of wargamers play new wargames.

I think you're missing the point. I know there is some good stuff out there. A good deal of you know I do modern gaming, hell I do more modern gaming than I do retro at the moment. I'm just not cool with where the industry is going though and I'm pretty confident that eventually (assuming it keeps doing so well) it's going to be nothing but the consumers being abused and zero innovation or evolution of any kind (regardless of the "quality" of the games, although quality is very subjective).Jmustang1968 wrote:There is such a variety of stuff out there right now, I think you would have to be willfully ignorant to think the way you are. That or you are only looking at the best selling % of games. I have more quality newish games of all sorts on my shelf that I don't have time to get to them all.
Either way, I know my ultra paranoid mentality is in the minority here and this is not going to end in anything other than me getting ganged up on, so I'm out. Just figured I would explain to you where I was coming from since you asked.
Re: Are all games rehashes now days?
That's exactly what happened to the Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero franchises. Rock Band has started laying low; they keep pumping out DLC songs but they don't have any more physical releases planned.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:It's us (the consumers) that say it's okay. Games are rehashes because we as gamers are idiots.
Look at how many times we say we want a new panzer dragoon or earthbound to be re released and new shining games or shenmue 3 on this board. Yet at the same time bitch about never getting new IPs.
People are idiots. In turn we are idiots.
Edit note I'm not trying to flame post at all it's just how I see it. Gamers aren't very creative so we want more of what we've had and liked in the past idiots.

Re: Are all games rehashes now days?
To be honest, I like more of whats in the past because I think they are better games.
Case in point (for me), I would have been happy if Final Fantasy 13 had been exactly like 12, but with 13's graphics. I *hated* 13 more than anything in the universe, or more accurately, I hated having my hopes smashed into rubble.
I like the gameplay of retro games to the point that they are the majority of what I play. The things that *I* like about modern consoles are the graphics and sound, storage space for movies and music, and thats about it. I don't like playing with other people on PSN or XboxLive at all.
You could remake ShadowRun, Shining Force, or a number of various PS2 games with improved graphics and call it a day, and I would be happy. Maybe I am part of the problem? I don't know.. I don't buy many of the blockbuster hits like Gears of War, COD, Battlefield, because I quit playing FPS shooters when I lost all desire to play games with other people a few years ago (which is another story).

So the possibility that a growing number of gamers are growing tired of the video game industry is totally out of question?AmishSamurai wrote:God, what's with all of the grognardy "EVERYTHING NEW SUCKS!" threads popping up recently? People are supposed to love everything new even if they hate it? I love 1980s metal and 1990s euro dance, but I cant say anything negative about Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne because everythings equal and personal preferences are not allowed?

How it's terrible and ruining everything and how gaming will be taken over by the dudebros and casual-mums! amirite?
So the people who dont buy these games in the first place need to stop buying these games or they dont have a right to criticize the fact that these games dominate the market, and they also need to stop whining about those people who buy them?RyaNtheSlayA wrote: When people stop buying Call of Duty and DLC, they'll stop producing Call of Duty and DLC.

My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Re: Are all games rehashes now days?
No, the general market needs to stop buying them. They will. Games, like fashion, have certain things that are "in". Eventually they become "out" and new things will replace them. Do I have to point out the platforming mascots or the five billion fighters in the 90s? Or Space Invaders and the clones that followed? Or as JMustang & MrPopo pointed out Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero?Menegrothx wrote: So the people who dont buy these games in the first place need to stop buying these games or they dont have a right to criticize the fact that these games dominate the market, and they also need to stop whining about those people who buy them?
You do have the right to criticize the games industry. I'm all for it. I don't really like the fact that FPS games are the cool thing right now. To whine about it like it's the only type of game on the shelves anymore is just plain dumb though. Most of the people that are "tired" of the industry's current state can't look beyond the tip of their nose. There are tons, and tons, and tons of games coming out for everybody except maybe the visual novel and point n click enthusiast.
I don't really think all that many people are really tired of the industry though. This is a retro gaming forum. A retro gaming forum filled with a bunch of retro gamers likely fueled by strong nostalgia and arrogance.
Edit: Got to give credit where credit is due.
