The voices honestly don't bother me.

I admit though, that I don't like the graphical style of the characters. They remind me of "chibi" anime, squat, chubby little things with big heads, and that bugs me.

Is this your first Tales game?
Was the snes game jap only?

I played Tales of Symphonia on the GC, but I didn't get very far into it. I can't recall why but I wasn't that impressed with it when i played it. I will probably give it another chance now though.

Do you have a favorite in the series?
Yeah they SNES version is Japan only. Though there is a very good English ROM as well as English reproduction carts.

Tales of Symphonia (and its sequel) are my favorites in the series. All the Tales games are good, really. There's just so many now it's hard to keep track.

Tales of Phantasia is the first tales game I've played. The combat system is wierd, but it's a really good games. This is easily my least favorite tales game. You should do Tales of the abyss and tales of vesperia, these games are awesome!

The gba does sound a little more muffled or something, I can hear a difference.

I've been staying away from roms for a while. I modded an xbox controller for my PC and it just doesn't feel right playing a lot of older games with that.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will definitely give symphonia another go since I have it in my GC collection. Are abyss and vesperia both on the ps2?

And that's on an emulator. Now imagine how much worse the sound gets when you use the stock GBA speakers.

I love the chibi sprites they used for the older tales games. I have Tales of Destiny for ps1 and I love fighting the enemies just to watch the sprites in action. I've never pleyed through Tales of phantasia but I've heard good things about it.

I just finished the Morlia Mineshaft part of the game ( a couple of the levels in here were frustrating trying to figure out what to do, but not too bad.) and got Claus' 5th summons Maxwell.

A few more thoughts on the game so far:
- The visuals of the game are really quite pleasing and detailed. At first I didn't really like that the summons and a few spells freeze the battle action while they are being performed, but I have come to like it just for some of the random poses character and enemies get frozen in. Like one of the ogre-like guys mid swing with his club, a big curved arc of club. Or Cress being frozen as a fireball, or the tear in the ogre's eye whilst being attacked.

- I am disappointed with the boss battles so far. I have pretty much steam rolled through all of them (except gnome, he was a bastard). I'm not sure if bosses will get harder, or if maybe I am just beefed up from grinding to master all of cress' special attacks, so that I could use the special combo attacks. The battle system is still fun, but I like a bit more challenge with the bosses.

-Aside from helping one couple get married there are not many side quests (yet?)

- I'm not a fan of having to run all over the place to pay the right ship captain to take you to the right port. It would have been nice if they just had one ship and you could choose where to go.

- Mint's AI is pretty useless, but it is easy enough to go into the menu and force her to do something. Her Nurse spell is pretty cool. The AI of the other characters is solid, and they can wreck some shit with their summons/magic.

Just a couple small complaints I guess, otherwise one of the better rpgs I've played in a while.

I hear ya about the gamepads, I'm pretty picky about them myself. I only play SNES ROMs with an actual SNES controller (hooked to a USB adapter).

Tales of the Abyss is on the PS2, there was also a 3DS port released recently. Vesperia is on the Xbox 360, I need to pick it up myself.

Do you have a Wii? The sequel to Symphonia (Dawn of the New World) is on the Wii, and is also a quality game.
