Tales of Phantasia (GBA version)
I have about 10 hours logged into the game so far and I am enjoying it. I heard some mixed reviews but it was mostly people liking another version (PS1, SNES) better. I've never played the other versions, so I can't say how it compares. But the GBA game is good fun. Buying new equipment is kind of annoying though because you can't see if it will increase your stats or not in the store menu, you have to buy it and go to the equip screen to check stats. That's my biggest gripe so far. story is decent, battle is in real time, fun and hasn't got tiring yet (battles in some of the turn based rpgs drive me nuts after a while.). It did take me a little bit to figure out the special attacks as I didn't have instructions and the game didn't have a beginning tutorial like some other do. Now I am going to get off here and get back to the game.

If you press the L button while in the store, it will show your current party in a window, so that when you highlight a weapon or piece of armor, it shows who can use it and whether it'll increase or decrease your stats.
It doesn't give you a hard number unfortunately (for that you do have to go into the equip menu like you said) but you can at least see if its better or worse than what you have.
Anyway, yeah, good game. I'm playing it myself right now actually, though you're much further in than I am. At the moment I'm trying to get a ship out of Venezia.

Sweet, Thanks for that tip. That will definitely be handy.
I'm not too much further than you. I spent some time grinding at work. I just got to Alvanista a bit ago.
Do you know what's up with the items like: ? book, ? sword etc. do you have to do something specific to reveal them or do they reveal with the progression of the story?

As for those ? items, I don't know about the specific details, but you do have to identify them yourself, and there's another item you must find that's meant for that purpose.
Sorry, I know that wasn't very helpful, but at least we know its not a story thing.

Such a good game! I did indeed enjoy the GBA port, but the SNES version is superior in every way.
Is this your first Tales game?

I think the inspection item was bottles or something. Check the item shops.
Aside from the people who preferred the fan translation (which took some liberties), the biggest issues with the GBA port is the voices are in terrible quality. They sound much nicer on the SNES.

I've had this game for years, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Maybe I'll give it a try next!

I played Tales of Symphonia on the GC, but I didn't get very far into it. I can't recall why but I wasn't that impressed with it when i played it. I will probably give it another chance now though.
Do you have a favorite in the series?

Good call, the rune bottle can transform items. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.MrPopo wrote:I think the inspection item was bottles or something. Check the item shops.

I haven't even been paying much attention to the audio. I usually have a podcast or music playing in the background. From what I have heard The music on the game is decent. I haven't noticed voices. I assumed it was all text. Would the lower quality have to do with the gba speaker vs the speakers on your tv with the snes, or is it just low quality?
edit: I see what you mean about voices now. Like when Cress does special moves during battle and such, it will say the name aloud. It doesn't sound bad to me, but I haven't played the other versions to compare it too.
