They last a little while longer if you remove the vmu from the controller after you're done playing and put it in sleep mode.

They last a lot longer if you purchase name brand CR2032 batteries from a legitimate retailer who has fresh stock.

I see a lot of those (5) packs from Hong Kong selling. As usual, you get what you pay for.

I've not noticed a difference in leaving it in the controller - I always leave them in. I suppose in theory if your DC is plugged in, the controller is plugged in, and the VMU is plugged in, you may lose a small amount of battery life.

Either buy a single battery for $2.50 and change it every 4-6 months
or
buy (5) batteries for $2.50 and change it every month.

In either case, official VMU's should still save your progress once you replace the dead battery.

VMUs will save batteries or not. I took all the dead batteries out of the 5 I have and aside from that BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP on startup my games are always saved. The batteries are useful to access the VMU features/downloads.

Yeah, I started wondering if mine was broken since the batteries died less than a month after I replaced them (and I think I played my Dreamcast for a grand total of two hours during that time since I was at school for most of it). I'm glad to know mine's not broken, but disheartened to know that I'll never have one that doesn't pull a lemming on me...
