Shin Butoden is my vote for the best classic fighter and the reason is simple, Game Modes.
Not only did the game feature a storyline mode, it also featured a well played tournament mode with full voice done by the commentator from the anime.
Also there was the Mr. Satan mode where you have to help Mr. Satan recover from his debt by betting on fights and trying to fix them with various objects in order to win. It was a blast to play.
The game itself had a huge roster of characters, each with an extensive move list (somewhat rehashed, but that's ok). The split screen aspect creates that dynamic fighting, not to mention the ability to knock your enemies into various environmental hazards AS WELL as knocking them into the Z access of the playing field (causing the background to flip to another view).

Excellent point. Shin Butoden had several game modes, and not to mention damn near every single character from the Z series (two Ginyu Force members, Furiza's henchmen, Cyborg #17, Raditz, Nappa, and a few others). Damn, actually...there were quite a few that they left out lol. But still, an incredible roster.BogusMeatFactory wrote:Shin Butoden is my vote for the best classic fighter and the reason is simple, Game Modes.
Again, all great points that make Shin Butdoden a must-have.Not only did the game feature a storyline mode, it also featured a well played tournament mode with full voice done by the commentator from the anime.

Yeah, I think that recent DragonBall Z games have spoiled us with an unprecedented roster (I'm looking at you Dranball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3), but for that time it was an ungodly amount. They even had Master Roshi, and Kid Goku.jalvarez82 wrote:

I have one an import copy of Dragon Ball Z Legends that I bought for my modded PSX when I was about thirteen. I remember it being pretty fun at the time... I'll have to give it a try today to see how it holds up.

Hyper Dimension was the only one I could remember being remotely good. I had the 3 on the PSone, but none were really all that great. Ultimate Battle 22 was one of my favorites at the time because I was amazed at the "animated" cutscenes that they had. DBZ legends (the earliest DBZ game on the PSone that didn't actually get released here.) was kinda cool. It was more of a action tug-of-war sort of game than a fighting game. At least it went through all the major story arcs in one game.

PSX Legends still remains one of my favorites. I had a great time playing thru it back in the day. Loads of fun! Very nice fast-paced fighting mechanisms too, once you get down all the different movements, inlcuding the quick aerial escapes/dodging and connecting combos. It's nice to watch cause it resembles the anime fight scenes really well.jfe2 wrote:I have one an import copy of Dragon Ball Z Legends that I bought for my modded PSX when I was about thirteen. 2P VS mode is a dissapointment, though.

I used to like playing Super Butoden and Hyper Dimension...but that was way back.I think I will try it out again..if I find them.
Re: Retro Dragon Ball Z Fighters
My favorite of all the retro DBZ fighter is definitely the Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu. This game was the Budokai Tenkaichi for its time
In addition, Final Bout had the best music of all the retro DBZ games.
BTW, my "first" DBZ game was Super Butoden 2 for SNES.
