The Genesis version is hard as heck, but then again, I've never been very good at 2D fighters. The music is incredible, though. It's worth it just for the soundtest.

I haven't played any of the other versions, so sorry to be of little help here.

I personally like both SNES and Genesis versions. SNES for the crisp control and look, and Gen. for challenge. Also, it has Casey Jones!

Doesn't that account for higher contrast that way?

And I may be biased for writing a FAQ on it, but the US SNES version is the best version out there. (The JP version added breakaway walls to the first boss stage and tweaked a few moves and sprites, but I still think the original was more balanced. The Genesis version is OK, a few steps above the NES version, which was a decent attempt given the limitations, but both had fundamental AI issues -- like defense.)

SNES version is easily the best!! 8)
