Anyone else feeling apathetic towards un-unique games?

I know exactly what you mean about not caring about new releases of the same-old, same-old. I literally roll my eyes every time I'm in an EB and the latest advertisement for a series of games that I haven't even started yet - as stated above, Assassin's Creed is a good example, and also all the current-gen twitch shooters/sports games. Nintendo is probably the worst for this though - they must release a new Mario game every six months at least.

That being said, I do enjoy playing new games that I feel nostalgic towards - Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, etc. Sure, it's probably a little bit of fanboy-ism talking, but I usually just genuinely love the characters/history of the series and want to continue the story. It can be argued that a video game series is a lot like a series of books/novels - the story doesn't stop until the author wants it to or people stop being interested. Personally, I love the story of most of the "classic" franchises, so I don't mind picking up the newest release to see what happens next.

What I actually find myself feeling apathetic towards are all the new fighting and shump games - to me, it seems like the same thing over and over again (which is kinda what you're saying in this topic). So, maybe it's all just a matter of taste in the end :)

It has nothing to do with the games being unique or not. Its been proven millions of times that people will eat up the same recycled shit over and over again.

Its the simple fact that these games you're talking about just plain suck.
I'd throw piles of money at Nintendo if they made sequels actually worth playing, but 90% of the games coming out nowadays just don't live up to the amazingness that they are known for. See: New Mario Bros Wii (fucking terrible name too), Donkey Kong Country Returns, all the new Kirby games, etc. These games just suck and they try to survive off the nostalgia factor, and/or the fact that its a major franchise, when the gameplay is subpar and unimpressive.

I sort of agree with the general point of your post, but what the hell? DKCR has subpar and unimpressive gameplay? How exactly? New Super Mario Bros was pretty cool too, but not nearly as good as DKCR.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box
