That being said, I do enjoy playing new games that I feel nostalgic towards - Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, etc. Sure, it's probably a little bit of fanboy-ism talking, but I usually just genuinely love the characters/history of the series and want to continue the story. It can be argued that a video game series is a lot like a series of books/novels - the story doesn't stop until the author wants it to or people stop being interested. Personally, I love the story of most of the "classic" franchises, so I don't mind picking up the newest release to see what happens next.
What I actually find myself feeling apathetic towards are all the new fighting and shump games - to me, it seems like the same thing over and over again (which is kinda what you're saying in this topic). So, maybe it's all just a matter of taste in the end
