One of my colleagues at work had a trackball mouse he wasn't using and I borrowed it. It makes a difference!
I'm now playing it on MAME, set 1 (is that the "official" one for our purposes, if we are doing it on MAME? Does anyone know about any differences? I know for Defender we all seemed to default to the Red Label for some reason).
I haven't passed level 3 yet

For Defender we played Red Label because it was the later version (and the one generally available in arcades), and had fixed a couple of bugs. For Marble Madness, people seem to be playing set 1, although I don't know the differences. Taking a glance at this page didn't reveal what the differences are:
