I think it has a lot to do with the basic set of controls, that while they can be used by pros to do very complex things, it's still incredibly fun, and more importantly very intuitive, to play even if you have no practice. My girlfriend loves Tekken, and she really doesn't play any other fighting games, and frankly I don't think she really cares that Tekken is a fighting game, she just enjoys it. To me, that says a lot about how good Tekken is, at least in my opinion.

I personally haven't noticed one way or another regarding Tekken. My friends are casuals when it comes to fighters and only play SC. And occasionally DOA.
