Best of luck. The thought of losing a console seems tragic. I'm rather glad that I have never had a console die on me over the years. I've had a few older consoles that needed a few tweaks but nothing that ever needed new parts (besides maybe a battery).

PS3 slim FTW.

Yikes, that sounds bad. Did a bunch of dust shoot out of it? I wonder if it's just really nasty in there and the dust inside the fan blades is firmly stuck there.
You could also move your HDD from this system to the other one as a temporary way to keep on gaming while you further clean this one. Hopefully the gpu is not perma-bad. I worry about my 60 gig fatty now.

can I just swap HDD's like that? I don't need to do anything else?

(I'm also wondering if maybe vacuuming would help, but not tonight)

Ugh, nevermind. I thought you could do that, but apparently if you do it will tell you to reformat. The drives are 'married' to the console they are in. The data however is not. If you do a backup from the menu in the one having problems, and save all that data to an external USB drive, you could then use Restore on the new ps3 and reinstall from your backup.

What a pain in the ass. I hope the vacuuming works, it's sure worth a try.

You can transfer all your data by linking the consoles with an ethernet cord. You would lose all data on the console you are transferring it to but I'm guessing that it is your main console that is going out so it would be easier to back up your secondary ps3.

Whatever method you choose to backup your stuff, do it soon while you still can. This might be nothing, or it might be a sign of disaster, so better to cover your ass.

Remember my folly from a few months back when my hard drive crashed and I lost everything because I hadn't backed it up. NOT fun.

OK so I vacuumed and it actually seems to have fixed the glitches! I can't be 100% certain, but I turned Journey on for five means and didn't see one, and before I was getting them immediately as soon as I started the game. So thanks for the advice on dusting! :D

Awesome! I'm about due to do that too. Those old 60GB models run HOT. 8)

so like I said I cleaned out the PS3 and the glitches seemed to go away. As it happens, I upgraded my HDD yesterday too, so I also cleaned out the HDD bay which was pretty dusty too! All seemed well. But now I'm a few chapters into Journey and the glitches are back. :? I'm guessing my GPU is going soon-ish? What really pisses me off is this means I'll have to re-migrate the new HDD to my back-up PS3 (another fat, but the 40GB non-BC version). What sucks is just how long it takes to switch HDD's. It took me about 2 hours to back everything up, and another 2 hours to install it on the new drive.

I know... first world problems. But still FML a little.
