Pink and Green glitches in Journey (PS3)

Post by noiseredux »

so this is weird. I keep getting weird pink or green shapes popping up in Journey. I tried to google and a lot of mention was on the HDMI cable. But oddly, I switched to several other games and never saw similar pink/green glitches in anything else (or on the XMB). Any ideas??

I'll probably play this game tonight. Will let you know if I experience any similar issues. Out of curiosity, what brand and model are your HDMI cable?

the HDMI cable says Rosewill on it. But what's confusing to me is that I'm only getting these weird colors in Journey. And even weirder, only when playing. If I pause the game it won't do it even. And no other games are doing it. :?

Pink and green appearing immediately brings to mind overheating GPU artifacts, but i'm guessing you probably take good care of your consoles and blow out all the dust and stuff. Hmm. Good luck, I hope you figure it out.

I didn't have that problem and haven't seen anyone who did on various sites. Maybe uninstall, re-download, and reinstall?

yeah I did see some articles about that too. But I'd think that immediately switching to another game would give me the same problem if it was overheating (or am I wrong?).

I think it all depends on how the game was coded. Some games are going to tax the CPU/GPU harder, and it doesn't necessarily depend on how complex the scene being rendered is.

Back when I worked on the Torque Game Engine (which we used to make Marble Blast Ultra for XBLA with), our engine used 100% CPU, regardless of whether it was needed or not.

It's possible that the game just uses a lot of resources. I would blow out your dust if you haven't in a while. I have a 2007 model 60GB PS3, and it's honeslty starting to run hot now even when I have just cleaned it, because I just *know* that the heatsink compound is all crusty and old.

I am too scared of wrecking it by opening it to clean it off and replace it though.

^ah, jeez that makes a lot of sense! Yeah. This is a 60GB beast as well. What's the best method of dusting it out? (IE: where do I want to be blowing in it?)

I use an air compressor on mine and blow air into the front vents below the disc tray and card slots, then in the top vents and the small vent by the HDD cage, then through the fins in the back. If you are hitting the cooler fan right, you will hear the fins spin quickly and a bunch of dust will hit you right in the face.

You can use canned air too, but take care not to tip the can and shoot a bunch of liquid into the unit. Lemme know how it turns out and good luck!

ok, so used compressed air. Plugged it back in, fired up Journey and now I'm getting even worse green screen flashes. Yikes. So either the GPU is going, or this thing needs to be massively cleaned. (I'm really glad I have another PS3 in the house... but the thought of backing up all my saves and redownloading all my PSN games doesn't sound fun.)
