I tried this on hard difficulty and had little problem getting to the fire boss. I guess the game isn't that difficult once you know what to expect. However, I wasn't able to beat this boss. I was probably a couple seconds worth of water away from beating him repeatedly, but could never pull it off due to how fast the platforms spin. He would always heat up again.

I liked how the game made a few changes to the layout on hard. You also start with one less heart, but that doesn't mean much, since heart containers are so easy to find.

I just gave the game another try on hard difficulty. I was able to finally defeat the fire boss. The rest of the game wasn't that difficult, with the exception of the snow boss. I finally figured out a pattern and settled on using the magic outfit instead of fireman outfit. A fully charged magic blast seemed to do much more damage than a stream of water.

After difficult bosses like those above, and the very first mini-boss (which I consider to be the second most difficult in the game), the final showdown with Pete is ridiculously easy.

I was able to complete the game without using any continues. I believe I died three times total.
My final score was 202,000.

The most difficult part of the game has to be the first few levels. You only have 2-3 heart containers and plenty of flying objects to hit you and spikes to land on.

Now I am ready for the sequel!

On hard, you start with one less heart, there is less helpful terrain (I noticed some grey blocks missing in parts), more enemies, and it seems like the bosses take more hits.

Zing wrote:It's been a while since I have played a game that is so difficult, yet so short. I have never played the game until today, but I have owned it for a while. I popped it in and completed it in about 3 hours including stopping an hour for lunch. That also includes a lot of deaths.

I suppose the game wouldn't be that difficult on my second play-through. Most of my deaths were from trying new things, exploring, and figuring out how to beat the bosses. However, the platforming is very unforgiving.

I was strongly reminded of the Little Nemo NES game. The changing of outfits. The sharp difficulty. The very short game length.

Anyone else play this game recently? I'll probably give it another try, maybe on hard difficulty.

I do wonder the purpose of the shop in the first level. I went in and nothing was for sale.

I just acquired the sequel (Great Circus Mystery) a week ago, so I decided to test it out today. Well, I ended up completing the game within an hour or so. My intent was to just see how the game played, but it was so incredibly short and easy, that I beat it without trying. It is a huge disappointment. I played it on "normal", but I can't imagine hard difficulty being that much more difficult. This game's "hard" is probably equal to the previous game's "easy"! The most difficult thing in this game is trying to jump with the damn horse! I can't believe they added a password feature. They must have really been aiming for the kiddie market here.

This isn't my biggest complaint, however. My main issue is that the costumes are lame and the levels are not designed for them. The game hands you all three costumes near the beginning, and they aren't really required for any particular level. Except for a few brief moments, I could probably get through the whole game as regular Mickey. Magical Quest handled this perfectly. It awarded you costumes throughout the game, and each costume had a particular level tailored especially for use with that costume. The costumes were very distinct and each served a purpose. The costumes in Circus Mystery feel like the designers had no idea what to create. The whole game feels thrown together.

Another thing is that the game hands out heart containers and 1ups frequently, and coins are virtually worthless. There is no need to collect coins, since the costume upgrades are pointless. I never run out of costume power.

One last thing that bothered me is how the game handles falling into pits. When you die, the game drops you right back into the action. That's fine, although it is one more reason why the game is so easy. However, when you fall into a pit and die, the game makes no sound to indicate this. You just fall, die, and reappear a second later. Twice during my game, I had fallen into a pit and only noticed after I reappeared and dropped into the pit again. There needs to be some sort of cue that the player has died. I suppose this instant-respawn was added to support the simultaneous two-player game, but it was rather jarring. I greatly preferred the first game's style of restarting the level upon death.

I'm going to try this again on "hard", but I do not have much hope for a better experience.

I watched a video play-through of the sequel, and I was not impressed. Looked way too easy.

I tried hard and it was noticeably more difficult. I got to the cloud boss and he was similar to the fire boss in the first game. The cloud needs to be vacuumed, and if you don't do it quick enough, he grows larger. I died a few times, but got frustrated and needed to take a break. Overall, the game on hard difficulty is about the same as the first game, except a tad easier due to the instant respawn.

The levels and costumes still feel, completely random. I tried to find this game in Nintendo Power, but no luck. Strange, since the first game was on a cover.
