I have currently been having a field day with my recently modded Sega Saturn and mainly I have been rocking shmups. I have been playing Radiant Silvergun, DonPachi, and Batsugun. Also I have been playing Cotton 2, not sure if I'd classify that as a shmup though even if there are elements. Do you guys have any recommendations for some other shumps for the Sega Saturn?

I have also been playing Ikaruga but I am always playing that so. Though I have been playing it more since it is now on XBLA.

Shmups are all I'm playing right now and I've been collecting SNES and Genesis shooters lately....

SNES:
R-Type III - aweome all the way around
Space Megaforce - another great Compile game. awesome weapons and stages.

Genesis:
Fire Shark - great old school WWII shooter. right up there with 1942-45
Truxton - old school space shooter. I'm liking this one, but it's hard
Hellfire - tough stuff, cool weapons sys but cheap bullets get annoying
Arrow Flash - not bad, i like the macross aspect exepct your mech it easy to hit!
Whip Rush - fun r-type clone and cool backrounds

I just picked up Air Buster and Gaiares so those are next!

I'm playing alot of Guwange and Blazing Star on MAME, those are both amazing titles. Also been playing DoDonpachi for Saturn and Trigger Heart Exelica for the DC off and on for the last couple months too.

*drools over lonecynic's PS2 imports*

soniklife - i think you've already hit the motherlode with radiant silvergun on the saturn, Soukyugurentai is a good looking vert shooter (although my copy has some slight errors displaying text), as is Striker's 1945, and Thunderforce IV is a really nice horiz shooter. I'm not aware of Cotton 2 though, must get wiki-ing!

I forgot to mention Gradius V on PS2 and Gradius Collection on PSP. I'm really concentrating on the 1st Graduis game, which is awesome - I can't believe it's 20+ years old.

I figured that Radiant Silvergun was THE shmups for the Saturn but just the same I'd like to check out as much as I can. Especially stuff that never saw release in the US.

And also definitely check out Cotton 2. It is a lot of fun. Visually very appealing and just a fun game to play.

I spend most time on MARS MATRIX, with Radiant Silvergun a close second.

Ikaruga is an ongoing campaign, also Soukyugurentai, Strikers 1945, Donpatchi, Chaos Field and Under Defeat for variety.
If you like mars matrix you would totally dig giga wing its so sweet and has an "interesting story line" Its between progear and giga wing for me

OMG I got to play DeathSmile's at a local retro-arcade. They rotate Japanese shmups often and I wonder how they do it. Dropped something like $15 in that machine to do my part. The graphics are simply amazing. Damn Microsoft to hell for putting off Cave. They wanted to make wikked games for Live Arcade and we would have gotten all of them.

I wonder if I practiced some good amount of hours I'd be able to 1 cc Ikaruga on normal.

I admittedly haven't been playing it much, but I must have over 10 hours into it total (as I already have infinite credis in the DC version) and yet can't even 1cc Easy. In Easy I think I can get without losing a life to level 3 boss, but from there onward it's really hard for me. And even with the special technique (which is probably what you are supposed to do) for level 4 boss I lose some lives there.

Ivo.
