I had a monitor once that started doing stuff like that. There was no help; it had to be pitched after a while. Better start looking for a new one.

With what I can gather from your 'tronic skillz, I'd say bin it and start looking for a replacement. Craigslist?

Could be a component going bad like a cap or diode, even the power supply. You said you do not see a way to remove the housing and take a look inside? Any TV repair place will charge you more than it's worth, sadly.

It is sad because I had a NEC 4pg 27" beast that rocked for 480p, but I snapped the neck during a transport to a con. I understand your pain. But I didn't pay for it, so easy come, easy go.

Damn, such a shame. I've been spending so much time gathering the accessories to hook my consoles up to this beast via RGB and VGA, and it seems unlikely I'll find another CRT with RGB hookups anytime soon.

The adjustments mentioned earlier does not cost anything to do, why not try it? It probably will not help, but you never know.

Yes. Just be careful as mentioned earlier, VERY HIGH VOLTAGE around the back of the tube and the fat wire from the CRT to the Flyback Transformer. The Focus Potentiometer is usually on that box looking device.

The risk is small as long as you watch where you put your hands and screwdriver, ideally a "plastic" tuning screwdriver is the best way. A jewelers screwdriver will work just be careful not to short out anything. Go in small increments when turning a pot, remember where you start from.




Usually there will be a bank of Potentiometers inside.


The Focus Pot is normally on the Flyback Transformer box like this. The fat wire cup goes to the CRT.

Ok, now that the video is there, I think it is less likely just a corroded spot on the focus adjustment since that is smoothly bouncing in and out of focus instead of quickly snapping in and out. But if you can carefully get to it, worth tweaking to try anyway. Unfortunately I agree with Majors, if it is more than a dirty adjuster, it is likely going to be expensive to fix.

If these suggestions don't work, I still wouldn't throw it out. 37" NEC Multi-sync xp-37 plus are pretty hard to find.
