I have lost all interest in the FPS genre. In the 90s, FPS was pretty much my favorite genre. I love Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, System Shock, Unreal, Serious Sam all that kind of stuff. Ever since Call of Duty-esque took over I've lost all interest. I would enjoy playing a game similar to the games I mentioned, but I don't really know of any like that aside Serious Sam 3, which I can't play because I don't have a gaming PC. The last FPS I was able to enjoy was Bioshock, although I found System Shock 2 to be the better game in pretty much every way.
Any suggestions for me?
[BGM for my post:
Funny, you beat me to it. I was going to say there needs to be more classic PC FPS fans here (or more talk)... but I guess you've hit up some of the big dogs. But I don't think there's anything wrong with going back to old ones you may have missed, which is what I've done over the last few years. Just playing the Thief games now and I can't recommend them enough, they were done by Looking Glass Studios who did System Shock 2 (along with Irrational Games), so it uses the same engine and the level design is just as crazy, along with the weird aesthetics. If that makes sense. You didn't mention Deus Ex either, which is probably my personal favorite of the FPS golden era (late 90's / early 2000's to me), and I usually tend to think it's probably my favorite post-16bit game of all time. Lost track of how many times I've replayed it.
If you want some new recommendations though, I'd say hit up the FEAR series. Half-Life 2, Singularity was really solid, and yeah.
Also if you liked the original System Shock, look into Ultima Underworld which started it all for these RPG/FPS hybrids. I plan to hit up Arx Fatalis sometime this year which is a spiritual sequel to these games, different developers... but it's from the early 2000's and looks like something I'll love.
But yeah, I guess Thief gets my biggest recommendation now if you never tried it. Game blew me away. Knowing you I think you'd be pretty impressed by the games art design and setting as well, I had NO idea it was going to be that freaking weird. Neo-gothic sci-fi medieval stuff, oh man it really pulls you into another world. Garret was insanely awesome too, although he talks, the game still does a good job at putting you in his shoes... the best part is how human he felt. He is vulnerable, fragile, and not a hero saving the world. Just doing his part stealing stuff to get by in life, when it evolves into something bigger. The whole intense sense of mortality the game gave off though was priceless, since the game did stealth better than anything else I've ever seen... you NEVER want to fight or get into action. It's all about being in the shadows because you're so fragile, and human. Might sound a little tedious, but damn they did it well... since I'm not ever really a stealthy kind of guy in games, but this was no joke like Splinter Cell or anything. This put you in the shoes of Garret in another world.
I'll just stop there.
I guess I'll give a shoutout to the Riddick games though, since it also did stealth really well to me. It was all about stealth and melee combat in those games, and I loved the world. Good underrated stuff.
