Just to go with what you said: Everything on Orange Box is great. If possible, try to aim for the 360 port, as even Valve admitted to it http://www.computerandvideogames.com/23 ... up-on-ps3/

The Timesplitters are a grwat FPS series, very accessible and great multiplayer. They are cheap and I think Brunoath will like them.

Q1: I want to get in the stealth genre but MGS1 and VR Missions didn't click with me. Will other stealth games change my mind? ie Splinter Cell?

Q2: For Mech titles, what are some that are fighters? I'm asking since I love Gundam Battle Assault 2 on ps1.

Sorta like a budget Elderscrolls and very miss directed when it comes to feedback/reviews,but yet now cheap enough to look all past that.So if your looking for an Oblivion type game that isnt as huge and much more easier to just pick up and play look no further.
That's grossly misrepresenting Dark Messiah! It's a first-person melee simulator, first and foremost. I've only played the PC version, but the combat in this game is just incredible... Which means it's nothing at all like Oblivion!

Maybe try the Thief series? Splinter Cell takes a lot of gameplay elements from MGS imho. If you do decide to try them, I say go with Chaos Theory first (and go with the PC version; you might still find some co-op buddies there [like me :P]) It's hard to give a recommendation without knowing exactly what you disliked about MGS. Thief is much more slow and deliberate; it forces you to take your time and avoid getting caught by making you very weak when caught. Stealth is literally your greatest weapon (which can be argued for MGS too, but that's more because of the controls!) so you'll want to stick to the shadows. I was obsessively sneaking around, listening to my footsteps, shooting out every torch... It's exhausting to be honest but it's an incredible game.

@swiftzx

Hows about:
BK's Sneak King-Very vanillia, yet pretty funny both xbox and 360 versions are on all disc of BK games!
Ive seen these floating around gamestops for a buck or so.

Manhunt w/Headset-Just make sure no ones watching you renact a stalking homicidal maniac.I loved cursing through the mic to alert the enemies and not mention you will be told directions on how to kill through the mic as well.

And for Gundam Fighter,Ive got nothing but Wartech Senko no Ronde maybe worth a mention.Kinda fighting in a shoot'em up type of way and the move(shoot) set is limited. The last and final boss is also impossible if anyones beaten it I would like proof!

I think I like this thread

I have lost all interest in the FPS genre. In the 90s, FPS was pretty much my favorite genre. I love Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, System Shock, Unreal, Serious Sam all that kind of stuff. Ever since Call of Duty-esque took over I've lost all interest. I would enjoy playing a game similar to the games I mentioned, but I don't really know of any like that aside Serious Sam 3, which I can't play because I don't have a gaming PC. The last FPS I was able to enjoy was Bioshock, although I found System Shock 2 to be the better game in pretty much every way.

Any suggestions for me?
[BGM for my post:

Funny, you beat me to it. I was going to say there needs to be more classic PC FPS fans here (or more talk)... but I guess you've hit up some of the big dogs. But I don't think there's anything wrong with going back to old ones you may have missed, which is what I've done over the last few years. Just playing the Thief games now and I can't recommend them enough, they were done by Looking Glass Studios who did System Shock 2 (along with Irrational Games), so it uses the same engine and the level design is just as crazy, along with the weird aesthetics. If that makes sense. You didn't mention Deus Ex either, which is probably my personal favorite of the FPS golden era (late 90's / early 2000's to me), and I usually tend to think it's probably my favorite post-16bit game of all time. Lost track of how many times I've replayed it.

If you want some new recommendations though, I'd say hit up the FEAR series. Half-Life 2, Singularity was really solid, and yeah.

Also if you liked the original System Shock, look into Ultima Underworld which started it all for these RPG/FPS hybrids. I plan to hit up Arx Fatalis sometime this year which is a spiritual sequel to these games, different developers... but it's from the early 2000's and looks like something I'll love.

But yeah, I guess Thief gets my biggest recommendation now if you never tried it. Game blew me away. Knowing you I think you'd be pretty impressed by the games art design and setting as well, I had NO idea it was going to be that freaking weird. Neo-gothic sci-fi medieval stuff, oh man it really pulls you into another world. Garret was insanely awesome too, although he talks, the game still does a good job at putting you in his shoes... the best part is how human he felt. He is vulnerable, fragile, and not a hero saving the world. Just doing his part stealing stuff to get by in life, when it evolves into something bigger. The whole intense sense of mortality the game gave off though was priceless, since the game did stealth better than anything else I've ever seen... you NEVER want to fight or get into action. It's all about being in the shadows because you're so fragile, and human. Might sound a little tedious, but damn they did it well... since I'm not ever really a stealthy kind of guy in games, but this was no joke like Splinter Cell or anything. This put you in the shoes of Garret in another world.

I'll just stop there.

I guess I'll give a shoutout to the Riddick games though, since it also did stealth really well to me. It was all about stealth and melee combat in those games, and I loved the world. Good underrated stuff.

Idk I felt like I wanted a game with magic and swords in first person view w/o all the task, dialogue and aimless wandering and thats were Dark Messiah stepped in.I rest my case

RPG with swords in first person? You might like King's Field. Hard to get into but supposedly very good.

Stealth Bastard fucking rules! But it's more of a puzzle game than proper stealth. It's really clever and the soundtrack is great!

BoneSnapDeez wrote:Can someone recommend some modern (by "modern" I mean Windows XP and above or console, I suppose) Western RPGs that may have flown under the radar.

I like mainly swords and sorcery/fantasy type stuff. My absolute favorites are D&D games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, and Neverwinter Nights. I'm not crazy about these AAA titles that have been coming out lately (Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls), but I did enjoy Divinity II, Dragon Age (the first one, not so much the second one), Risen, Torchlight and The Witcher.

I feel like I must have missed some games along the way though. I keep seeing really inexpensive CRPGs on Amazon, but can't tell if they're worth playing. Any recommendations: send 'em my way!

(yes, I do play games that aren't JRPGs! )

Temple of Elemental Evil was supposed to be decent, if you haven't played that one.

If you avoided Neverwinter Nights 2 due to the fairly lousy launch, you might give that a second look, and the Mask of the Betrayer addon was quite good (kinda-sorta continues the main campaign).

Played the slightly older Bioware titles like KoTOR and Jade Empire?

You may also enjoy Guild Wars if you haven't played it. It is an online game, but no subscription fee, and it's entirely soloable - you flesh out your party with NPCs, and the actual game takes place entirely in instanced areas, I can only think of maybe 2-3 places where other players might be thrown in the mix too without you deliberately inviting them (or vice versa).
I know it ducked my radar for years because I dismissed it as a PvP game - and it does have that. But it's also got a much bigger and better PvE game than most realize.

Arcanum maybe?

I'd second that it's odd you didn't mention Deus Ex then, but in the same vein, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is a fairly similar game to that - actually, in some ways, a superior game. The main issue it has is that it's buggy as all hell, but the unofficial patch makes things manageable. (near 50 page Neogaf thread here from one of the times it was on sale on Steam).

Definitely falls into the "RPG" realm a lot more than the shooter - until you pump points into the skill to shoot guns, you can't hit much, for example. But, if you enjoy any of the FPS/RPG hybrid style games, you really should at least keep it in mind the next time it's on a Steam sale.
