PS3 Titles Worth Playing
Re: PS3 Titles Worth Playing
Yeah, I thought XIII had a fantastic combat system. But then again, I liked playing with the gambits of XII, so maybe I like figuring out how to get an automated system to work for me rather than micromanaging every turn.

The battle system is one of my biggest complaints about FF XII and XIII. The games literally play themselves. I suppose I can see how it would appeal to some, but for me it feels mind numbing.

It's hard to appreciate the game's combat until you get to Gran Pulse. That's when the enemies get harder and the game takes off the training wheels and let's you do what you want with your party. It also introduces optional enemies for you to hunt down, some of which are brutally difficult to take down. FF games have never shied away from being uber cheap when it comes to tough, optional enemies and bosses. These require you to properly manage your party during combat as well as have the right character set ups and strategies for a chance to survive, much less get five star ranks. At that point in the game, you feel very much in control because if you're not, you're dead.brunoafh wrote:The battle system is one of my biggest complaints about FF XII and XIII. I'll admit though, like Popo said, FFXII and FFXIII feel a little more strategy oriented in that your characters will attack, heal, etc. on their own, but you have to play commander and make sure you're making everyone take the right actions. It's less about manually controlling every single thing your characters do and more about managing your team like a coach. That seems to be the direction the series has taken, but I like it. I thought FFXII's gambit system was great too

Eternal Sonata is the best one.
As far as exclusives go, check out Hyperdimension Neptunia, Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel, Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland, and Demon's Souls.

This, very much so. You end up doing a lot of paradigm flipping once you get to this point in the game, not to mention the various custom paradigms you might create for single encounters. At this point what the game does is automate some of the false choices in previous games. For example, your ravager is your black mage. When you cast black magic you want to hit enemy weakness, if they have none then you just want to use magic that is neutral on them (not halved/blocked/absorbed). But if your enemy has no elemental weaknesses/resistances you don't care if it's a Firaga or a Thundaga spell; they each have the same spell power. The way you learn an enemy's elemental properties is either trial and error or using libra. There is essentially no skill involved in black magic skill selection; either you know their weakness or you don't. So removing that aspect from the player (through auto-battle) retains the core play of a black magician, which is hitting enemy weaknesses through spells. This gets accomplished in XIII through the stagger bar and through general enemy resistances; a triple rav party can destroy certain enemies MUCH faster than a triple com.Gamerforlife wrote:It's hard to appreciate the game's combat until you get to Gran Pulse. I think this is why I really like the two Ogre Battle games and Soul Nomad. Those games are more about building good units and matching them up against enemy units properly. The actual battles play without your involvement.I'll admit though, like Popo said, FFXII and FFXIII feel a little more strategy oriented in that your characters will attack, heal, etc. on their own, but you have to play commander and make sure you're making everyone take the right actions. I plan on giving Hyperdimension Neptunia MK II a try, but that version only because it promises to fix some of the problems of the first.

like I said, I'm a big fan of the first. But the 2nd looks like it's going to really tighten about a lot of loose ends. I think it could bring in a lot of new fans actually.DomitorInvictus wrote:I plan on giving Hyperdimension Neptunia MK II a try, but that version only because it promises to fix some of the problems of the first.

Might bring me in. I loved the general idea of the first game, but the gameplay just looked so bland. An improved battle system would increase my interest in the game tenfold, as the battle system was pretty much my only gripe.noiseredux wrote:like I said, I'm a big fan of the first. Yes, there are dozens. Close to 100 of them. It's a Sony console, of course there is going to be an abundance of RPGs.Hazerd wrote:Is there even 10 RPG's on the PS3?
