Have any 8/16 Bit Sports Games Aged Well?
Re: Have any 8/16 Bit Sports Games Aged Well?
WWF Royal Rumble for the Genesis is still fun.

WWE RAW isn't bad if you have Turbo controllers. (I believe the 32X version is the most superior.)
I'd still prefer the SCD's WWF cage-match R&R port.
Also, anyone play Tecmo Bowl last week?

But isn't that what NHL 94, Tecmo Bowl, Baseball Stars and possibly the Soccer games you list(I don't follow the sport) were trying to do? They just did it with limited technology, so they aren't as complicated as newer sports games. NHL 94 is as close to a realistic sim you could get at the time. That's part of the reason why is still so popular. Similar to NFL 2K5 more recently that has developed a similar cult following.timewarpgamer wrote:
THANK YOU. That is PRECISELY the point I tried to drive home with this top 10. I think that attempting to deliver ultra-realistic content in sports games does little other than guarantee that you'll be obsolete and forgotten in a year.

One that hasn't made the list yet, but should have, is Super Baseball 2020 (Neo Geo, SNES, Genesis). It's robots playing baseball with a few new game rules to adapt to their super robotness.

Didn't feel like reading through the entire thread, but did any one mention Street Slam / Street Hoop / Dunk Dream?

It's such a fun, addictive game. It quickly became one of my favorite retro sports games shortly after I first tried it.
This video does a good job going over the game:
I had it for NeoGeo CD, but I have since sold that system. I have it for the Wii Virtual Console now, but I really miss the clicky D-Pad from the NeoGeo CD controller. Whenever I play this game, the songs get stuck in my head instantly.

The SMS has one of the greatest 8-bit baseball games ever: Reggie Jackson Baseball. You should definitely check it out.timewarpgamer wrote:Seems like this genre has especially been hurt by the passage of the years. What do you think? The only games I can think of that are still really playable are:
Blades of Steele (NES)
NBA Jam (Genesis and SNES)
NHL '94 (Genesis)
Pete Sampras Tennis (SNES)
Also, can't really think of any Sega Master System of TurboGrafx-16 sports games that were EVER good. Not to mention held up over the years...

I have this for the Virtual Console as well. I guess because this is a Data East game, we won't see it on PSN or XBLA anytime soon. I don't know who has the rights now either. At least the VC got a ton of DE stuff in 2009 before they went under.Ziggy587 wrote:Didn't feel like reading through the entire thread, but did any one mention Street Slam / Street Hoop / Dunk Dream?
