I put this piece together which breaks down every NFL Blitz incarnation:

Thanks for the link. With Madden it really doesn't matter. Just versions that stand out.

Generally the best version of Madden for a particular generation is the last one that the "main team" worked on before shifting their resources to the up and coming console. So, for example, Madden 95/96 is much better on the Genesis than Madden 97/98 was, Madden 2000 or 2001 is the best for the PS1, Madden 2006/2007 is the best for PS2/GCN/Xboxetc. Those iterations usually perfect several years of learning how to push the system and are the most important/best selling Madden for that year. ..

How about Blitz? I wasn't quite clear on which from the link.

The first three Blitz games all have near arcade-perfect ports on one system or another. The formula is always the same so you don't see growth from year to year like you would with Madden (since that was the early '90s). Actually up until NFL Blitz Pro, the games all had 8.0+ scores at review sites. Even Pro was still around a 7.

If you want a definitive version to play, I'd say either the original on the Nintendo 64 or either of the two Dreamcast games.

I think those games hold up to the most recent release also:

^ From the original PlayStation, I'd go the original or NFL Blitz 2000. NFL Blitz 2001 switched engines to the Kurt Warner Arena League game and was a big step back.

I'd say probably NFL Blitz 20-03, their second effort on the newer hardware (maybe 6 months after 20-02).
