Something that I've always loved about every Sonic game since the beginning is this: the bosses have clear attack patterns and clear hooks. You discover the hook (the technique you must employ to land a hit) and, once you become skilled with it and master the attack patterns, you can win. I thought SA2 did this very well, with the Finalhazard's multiple and challenging attacks and the limited time provided to succeed. Plus, Live and Learn is an awesome final battle song. That, and having various members of the cast call up to you and voice their encouragement, seals the deal for me. I would BS around in space just to extend the time I spent fighting that thing.
I think the problem is that there isn't any build up to the boss. Cause I too thought it was an awesome idea(and Live and Learn rocks, FUCK YEAH), but the entire game was spent showing how awesome Shadow is, not a giant lizard thing which can put a colony up its butt (or is that a colony up its colon? 8) I made a funny ...... ).

And sometimes getting to that red orb thing can be a pain. Though I too think of the 3D Sonic games that's the most awesome boss battle. Heck, if you add the 2D sonic games it's probably the 3rd best boss battle (after S&K and Sonic 2)

You know those cool vocal tracks are just another thing that gives Sonic games that Sega feel. Compare that to the boring tracks getting recycled over and over again in Mario games. Nintendo relies far too much on nostalgia

True. Have you played Skies of Arcadia or Valkyria Chronicles? AMAZING soundtrack.

I need to play Jet Set Radio too.

And of course, Outrun's sountrack <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

......cry.....old Sega why did you have to die? There are very small glimpses of your former glory left in the gaming world :'(

Sega's first-party output is nearly dead but they've still managed to publish some of my favorite games this generation: After Burner Climax, Condemned, Vanquish, Bayonetta, Alpha Protocol. And they've still got Yakuza and Valkyria burning strong (though why did they move that to PSP? Stupid...) on top of all the incredible fanservice they've been doling out with the Genesis collection and the Dreamcast HD ports. Though if you ask me, Sonic was never much good to begin with

I have to agree, it started off poorly. Then came Sonic 2.

.....yeah ok that's debatable. Though honestly it's like saying Mario started poorly cause the original SMB sucks compared to SMB3 SML2 and ect.

Mind I'd agree with such a notion cause I find SMB boring and very badly aged (on the other hand 2 and 3 are still to this day fun games :) )

Oh SMB3, now that I mentioned it. The game who's first level teaches you how to play without a single text box :)

Sonic games just never did anything for me. Both Sonic and Mario are similarly designed in that you can usually intuit where and win to jump naturally with the flow of the level, but I've always felt like Mario was for people who like to play games and Sonic was for people who like to watch them.

And the music is terrible.
