PS3 internal PS1 memory card is full??
Re: PS3 internal PS1 memory card is full??
I actually kind of miss memory cards. Internal memory is a LOT easier but there was something nice about being able to just pop a card, grab a disc, and start up your game on another console.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I remember how your saves would just be on the cart. You didn't have to remember which memory card had which save.Flake wrote:I actually kind of miss memory cards. Yeah but I have always been paranoid about the battery dying. Dumb, I know. I have a Mario Land 2 cart with the battery still intact so the longevity is proven.MrPopo wrote:I remember how your saves would just be on the cart. Yeh, memory cards are way less stress than batteries.
I have two virtual PS1 cards just in case! Since they're only 128kb just always have one extra.

VMUs were the best; you could even transfer files with the system turned off.

True, but it should let you bring up the PS3 menu and create a new one like you are able to swap cards while in game on a PS1.SirPsycho wrote:They could not do that without destroying the emulation process. PS3 doesn't just run software emulation of PS1 games, it has a PS1 inside the system. Given that the actual PS1 hardware is inside they had to play by the hardware's rules, so we all have to deal with tiny '8-meg' memory cards.noiseredux wrote:yeah that sucks. That's definitely an oversight in the system that should be fixed. You should be able to create a new one in-game.

Re: PS3 internal PS1 memory card is full??
PS3 does use software emulation to run PS1 games. It's so powerful that perfect emulation just isn't a problem. Heck, the PSP does just fine with software. No reason to have PS1 chips in there. The early PS3s had PS2 hardware, and the slightly later ones (like mine) have emulated PS2 support with the real graphics chip. Also the early PS2s had PS1 hardware in them, but I'm pretty sure the slims use software for that too.
Either way, the games are written to support a very small filesystem. You'll have to save games in 128kb chunks. That's 16 games per memory card, folks.

I was wondering, would it just make more sense to make a seperate PS1 virtual memory card for each PS1 game you play? Is there a limit to how many you can make? Ijust think it might be easier to find your saves if you just had memory cards named "Final Fantasy VII" or at least "Final Fantasy Games" or something... how do you guys name/organize yours?

Re: PS3 internal PS1 memory card is full??
When I first played a PS1, I didn't understand the memory card thing either. I figured that a FFVII save file would just "write" onto the disc. I was pissed when I realized I needed an extra piece of hardware to save, figured it was some scam conjured up by Sony to make money. I remember thinking, "My old NES didn't need separate cards to save games and there's no load times either! Screw this PlayStation crap!" Yeah, I was a jaded retro gamer even back in 1996.

Batteries in memory cards can die too.Flake wrote:Yeah but I have always been paranoid about the battery dying. Dumb, I know. Ps1 emulation on Ps3 is far from perfect. Many games have everything from minor graphical bugs to stuff that's game breaking.Valkyrie-Favor wrote:PS3 does use software emulation to run PS1 games. It's so powerful that perfect emulation just isn't a problem.
One example that comes to mind immediately is the ps1 port of Final Fantasy V. On the ps2, it has a glitch that causes the graphics on the save screen to become garbled. This is a minor issue as backing out and going back in will show you the normal screen. On the ps3, however, the game just flat out crashes. That was a very frustrating discovery to make!
For the most part, it works pretty well, but I keep a psone around still for the occasional game that the ps3 has trouble with.
